Title: samari not wanting to take gas
Post by: lowrider on June 17, 2008, 07:12:05 PM
i just got a 86 samari from my dad so im new to 4x4. all i've had have been lowriders. my samari was running good then it started not wanting to take the gas in gear. its weird sometimes you can rev it up hi and it will clear out and sometimes it wont. had to leave it at work cause i couldnt get it out of the parking lot it would fall on its face once i went to second. then it was in first same thing. any help getting it going would be great. i got some good ideas for it but i got to get it back rolling.

That sounds like carberation to me.  Maybe someone here will have a more specific place to start for ya.  I am a big fan of injection because of the intricacies involved in carbs sometimes.

ok i replaced the fuel pump today. took the pressure reading and it was under 3 psi. put the new on and took it for a spin around the block at work. it did good at first, then it did the same thing again. stalled out when i tryed to rev it up enough to go. when i started it back up it seamed to run fine. i was doing 50 in a 45 no problem. im going to try and drive it tommorrow and see how it does. if anyone can thing of else that i might be over looking i would greatly welcome  the help.

Might be the carb plugging up.

does sound like a fuel problem.
might try fuel filter replacement, and check all the normal tuneup type stuff + make sure all vacuum lines ok.
isn't the secondary on that carb. vacuum operated?
if that doesn't turn up anything, mabe open up the carb. and clean it out.
i think an overhaul kit is |removethispart|@ 30?
just some thoughts.

i would spend the $30 on a rebuild kit.Could be a sticky float or pump.

ok tryed to drive it home friday and it acted up half way home then run great.same as before, i had replaced the fuel filter on sunday but i didnt recheck it it see if there way trash in it. the only tune-up stuff i havent replaced yet is the cap and rotor button. run out of money buying the plugs, wires, and fuel filter. i ohmed out the coil, the primary ohmed right but the secondary didnt seam to have the right ohms so im going to replace it get a new fuel filter and order a carb rebuild kit. thanks for all the help. any more ideas would help thanks.

sounds like you're on the right track, and will straighten it out.
i have experienced the failing coil thing before, and some of those symptoms had me thinking fuel problem, till i checked it. i replaced it with a MSD2(blaster) as it was |removethispart|@ same price as stock w/higher output.
you will probably end up with some good spare parts before you're done.
you will know your rig better when you're done.

Go to ACK's FAQ (google) and look up "redneck tuneup". It'll come up with a cheap / quick way to try and clean your carb.

For future ref...
You can extend the life of your plug wires by wrapping them with electrical tape. If your budget won't allow you to replace cap & rotor - wrap the plugs and buy cap and rotor instead. Buy plugs when you can afford them.

My local parts store had a msd 3 blaster in stock.will this work in place of a msd 2? Looked online and they have the same output.will try it when I get off work at 6:00.

some coils need a resistor.
my sidekick doesn't use a resistor for the stock coil, and the msd2 didn't either(direct swap).
i don't know |removethispart|@ the msd3. parts literature should say.

You may also be running a batch of bad gas or water through.  You might dump some Heet in there just for grins.

It sayes if you have points you need a resitor.I don't have points. I just have to put on the supplied boot for the coil.the blaster 3 has an extender on top.
