Just as the title asks, will a 1.3 samurai engine fit into an '89 sidekick? I am looking at a local sidekick and Id likely replace the engine with a rebuilt 1.3 samurai engine, mostly because it would be cheaper and simpler than rebuilding the stock engine.

i have an '89 kick, and it has the 1.3L in it.
i have been wondering the same thing- something |removethispart|@ A and B motors?
i also wonder if the 1.6L from the same year would fit, but i suspect it doesn't mate to the tranny?
i'm watching for other responses.

The 1.3 engine (Samurai) will not bolt directly to the 1.6 engine's (Sidekick/Tracker) transmission. EXCEPT if you get the rare 1.3 bellhousing from a 1989 1.3 model Sidekick. That is the only way it's a "bolt together" project. So you do all this leg work, find the parts, bolt it together and then, you'd have a pooch. If you have a Sidekick that needs a rebuild on the engine, do that instead of putting the 1.3 in it. My $.02

He has an 89 Sidekick, maybe it is a 1.3. If you swap between a 1.3 and a 1.6 you will also have to something about the engine mounts as they are slightly different.

I'm glad someone asked this question, as I am about to do this. I have a 1.3 from a Samurai and am about to replace the 1.3 that is in my sidekick. I am probably gonna freshen up the sammy motor before the transplant.

I was actually under the impression that all '89 sidekicks had some form of the same G13 engine, also carburated. Because of that, I thought it likely that they would be interchangeable, and for the same reason also figured that the sammi engine would not be a downgrade.
Though, I think I found an actual Samurai that I like so I dont think Ill have to bother with this.

i'm pleased w/the response you have gotten. i can look around better now. there are not many of these '89's around, and i was looking at those sammy motors - they sure looked the same to me!
i've been wanting a motor to work over, as mine can't last forever.

Not bad. $1850 for the engine with core charge and shipping, and you get back about $300 of it when you ship your old engine back, so about $1550-$1600 total for a completely redone engine. It is an especially good deal when you consider the cost of the included (and installed!) accessories (belts, pumps, pulleys, etc), as well as all the gaskets. I had a 4cyl engine rebuilt, JUST to have the engine vatted, bored / honed, head machined flat, head rebuilt, block line-bored, was like $850 (and it took them 2 months). This did not include any of those accessories, any gaskets (I supplied the kit), machining any of the rotating assembly or supplying bearings (I bought those all separately from another race shop), or any hardware (new head bolts or crank bolts).
Hell, autozone wants over $1900, plus $500 core charge, for just a long block with no accessories (no pumps, belts, etc). So, if you went that route you'd be looking at like $2500 (after your core is returned) for the complete engine assembly.
That company also offers a "HO" engine with higher-compression pistos and a presumably better cam, for $1599.

i just picked up a 98 tracker with a 16 valve only 97,000 miles for 150 bucks just needed a headgasket, got a 94 4 door kick for 400 runs great in my sami most exspensive part was having trail tough convert my harness 250, i would never put any down grade motor in anything, even the most built sami engine is the equivalent of crap, you just gotta do some lookin save your money and look when a deal comes jump on it thats my .02 cents

You can bolt 1.3 engines to 1.6 trannys. As mentioned, the rare 89, 1.3 carbed sidekick had a special tranny bellhousing that had the 1.3 pattern on the engine side, yet bolted to a trackick tranny. You can also buy (or make) lower engine to tranny adapters (I have done this) to mate a trackick tranny to a 1.3 engine.
Everything that I have read/heard/etc. points to the 89 sidekick 1.3 engine as being the same engine that the samurai uses.
One thing to remember.......if you are swapping from a factory 1.3 engine to a 1.6 engine in an 89 sidekick.....the 1.3 is carbed, the 1.6 will be EFI.....so unless you plan on running the 1.3 carb on the 1.6 engine, the wiring harness will have to be changed out, an ECM added, etc.

Don't forget the bottom end of the Geo Metros had better parts. If I were doing a 1.3L again, I'd go with a hybrid Geo Metro bottom & propane conversion ($700).
Helps that you'd be ready for a turbo with this setup ;D
