Title: CV axle sound???
Post by: mallard75 on June 28, 2008, 01:46:38 PM
Just wondering if anyone out there has had this issue... I think it may be the hub, but maybe not. When working on the passenger side of the car last night installing a new CV boot, I was noticing the when I turn the half shaft, it made a subtle clicking noise.... sorta like it was indexed.  Anyway, when driving with the hub locked but in 2wd, there is a grinding noise from over there.  if I unlock the hub, it stops.  The hubs are pretty fried and will need to be replaced soon, but the way that half shaft felt when I turned it makes me think I have a bigger problem.... anyone had this experience? It is a 95 sidekick 16v

side note: i just went out and jacked the truck up, locked the hub and spun the wheel...sounds like it is coming from the differential...

Have you been running the 'Kick in mud or water?

It might be the bearing working loose on the passenger's side of the dif caused by a leaky seal.

Whatever the problem is, I would start by tearing down the passenger's side checking components as you go.  First check the wheel bearings
Check the cv shaft for excessive play.  Check the outer differential seal for damage.

Finally, if you haven't found the problem, it's time to pop the driver's side CV shaft, remove the short axle shaft and pop the third member to see what's going on in the dif.

Ther is lots of how-to-stuff on the boards.  Most all of it is searchable through Ack's FAQ (see signature).  Search for stuff like cv and differential.

For me, fixing it is half the fun!
