This is my first post on this forum, just joined last week, sorry for the lengthy first post.
I'm looking to lift my 94 Tracker, its a daily driver until I get another car, but thats not in the near future. Once I do get another vehicle, I would like to make this a trail vehicle, mud, sand, rocks. I'm looking at possibly the Calmini 3" lift at this time. Also, I'm considering undergoing a 4 X 4 conversion seeing as how the Track is only 2 wheel drive at this time. Has anyone done the 3" lift on a daily driver and has anyone undergone the 4 X 4 conversion, any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, red94track

The mounting hardware that you need for the conversion to 4 wheel drive is all there, you'll just need a donor vehicle to nab the parts out of (trans, tcase, front diff, knuckles, CV's, etc.).
I had the 3" lift under my rig as a daily driver, but due to certain circumstances, my Tracker's no longer my DD. But there are a few people here with the Calmini 3" lift on daily drivers, and for their rigs, it works out great.

I have a chilton manual that lists all the items that you need to do it, I figure I could get everything used and do the work myself for under $1000

You could probably get a Tracker with a bum engine for a couple hundred...

The 2" Calmini lift would probably be better for a DD.
Just my .02

By the way, Welcome!

sorry, but i'm not understanding 100%.
CwKick, why would a 2" be better for a DD than a 3"?
it might just be how we interperet the term daily driver, or it could be another reason.
i myself have 2 cars, but i have been driving my vitara on a daily basis for a while now. the only drawbacks, is that my vitara doesnt go very fast, nor does it need to.
i don't really see a difference in 1" of lift. i'm not trying to start an agument or anything, its just i would like to get a better understanding on how you guys see thing over there. (so i don't make a fool of myself on your forum)
thanks

Too Late :P J/K
A 2" lift rides better without
all the heavy bumpers and winch
on the vehicle, and that's really
the only reason

i suppose if your not a 4wheeling nut (like the majority) then you might prefer better ride and handling on road.
but as we all know, you need to sacrafice to gain, and to tell you the truth, my vitara rides sh!th0use on road, as its a soft top, and as light as anything, and you can really feel all the bumps on the road, but then again, who said i was driving a merc?
its an acquired taste for some, but for others, its in their blood. people complain to me so much about the noise my tyres make on road, and they aren't even in the car, but i say, what noise? its not the same with out road noise etc etc. blah blah blah.......
even though its rough as, its always tough as.
time to..... :-X

EDIT: sorry this reply has nothing to do with the topic

By daily driver I mean 80 miles round trip to work and back. Its all highway miles. Currently I run at 75 mph on the highway and thats the normal flow of traffic. After the lift I would like to put some new rubber underneath, thinking maybe 235/75R15 on some black rock crawler 15 X 8. Just some thoughts.

The Calmini 2" kit will allow you to dirve how you do now just a little higher and with bigger tires. I have it on my daily driver (1000 miles a week) and it works great. If you are wanting better off road performance the 3" kit will be better but it will be more harsh on the road than the 2" kit. With the 3" kit and 33's on my kick I can drive 70-75 all day long, it just rides rougher than the 2" lift.

I'm not too concerned with the ride, I mean, it is supposed to ride rough, its a 4 wheel drive vehicle. So with a 3" lift I can fit 33's. I thought you could only go to like a 30 or 31. Nice, I might have to re-think my choice of tires.

You will notice that your vehicle is going to start straining at highway speeds with bigger tires. With the stock 205s on mine I could easily reach 90mph on a flat road, with the 215s it would get there but take longer, with the 235s I can have it floored and not make it to 80mph. Granted it does have over 170K miles on it, but it also has a a hi-flo air cleaner, header and 2" exhaust. Many a time I've been tempted to go back to 215s for commuting and save the 235s for weekend fun. I would consider going to 31" tires if I get 5.83 gears in it. First things first though...time to get a rebuilt engine in this thing ;)

Not with just the 3" lift. I've got the 3" suspension + 3" body lift and some fender cutting to fit 33's. If you go to a 33 you will no longer use 5th gear unless you do 5.83 ring and pinion's. I'm not sure what you can run with just the 3" suspension lift, but 31's sounds right.

SiKiD,
The two inch is a little easier to install and you will probably have less breakage problems when off road. The 3 inch lift is very good but like others have said, it works better if you are putting a bumper and a winch on.
I'm not putting on the heavy accessories so a two inch lift will work for me!
It's less expensive also! ;D
You need to figure out what you are going to use you vehicle for and build it the way YOU want it.

I use mine as a daily driver.Sidekick 1.6L SWB,Calmini 3"+3",31x10x15,no bumbers,no additional weights.
No problems at all.The suspension was a bit hard, but I got used to it.Besides after 1 1/2 years of use , I think it just got a bit softer now. ;D
When I installed the 3+3 ,the first day ,I was taking turns very very carefully, cause I was feeling  that if I turn the steering a bit more on a turn ,there will be a roll over.. :P
The only problem with a lifted truck is that you cant go fast (exceptions always exist-Wild- ;)) .But I dont care about speed ,cause I could almost had a leathal accident with my previous car (Audi A4,1.8T).Nothing serious happend at the end,but after a week I sold it and got the kick.I never go over 60 miles/hour.,and to tell you the truth ,I dont want to.Only once that I wanted to know the max speed it could go,it reached if I remember right ,70-75 miles/hour.
I m glad that I have the 3"+3" lift for many reasons. One of them is because it has fun whenever I  watch the  expression of the  face ( :o :o :o) of a Cherokee (the prev model) or stock TJ driver when we meet on the road...ha ha ... ;D

What do you mean by saying you won't use 5th gear, is the gearing changed that dramatically?

I have the three inch suspention lift and a 2 inch body lift. I drive 75 miles round trip over hills on rough roads every weekday. I removed my antisway bar and I like driving my Tracker more now than I did before. When I went to 31's from stockers my top speed went from 85-90 to 75-80mph so there is a pretty big difference in gearing. However when I swiched to the 16V motor I got my top speed back just not going uphill. When I am on a smooth piece of highway it really doesnt seem to ride any different than it did before. If anything it feels a little more responsive in its handling. So I say get the three inch, if its way to rough for you just put your stock springs back in with some spacers to get your ride back. Then when you turn your truck into pretty much a trail rig you can put the big springs back in.

Hmm, at the point of getting the 4x4 donor, i think it might just be less of a headache to just drive the 2x truck to work and lift the "donor" to beat up on the trail. Just a body lift and tires, then go have fun! ;D
