Title: I have rust!
Post by: jerryp58 on October 04, 2004, 11:01:43 AM
Oh no.  How the heck did I get rust here in the south ???

I have holes rusted all the way through in the back seat area, right where the seat belts attach to the fender well wall :'(

I noticed that the carpet at the corners by the back door are a little damp and I'm thinking I've got water coming in and settling at the lowest spot (where the rust is).

Do the tin tops have some place(s) obvious where they develop leaks?  I looked around and nothing jumped out at me.  The weather strip looks good around the door and the rear windows.  I wouldn't think it could come in from the tail light area.  Any ideas?

Guess it's time for the tin snips, some sheet metal, and the rivet gun :-/

Maby that's just in Michigan.  :P

I'd check for it coming around the wheel well area, probably spray from the tires getting in. If a spot doesn't stand out that you can see, spray all around the area with undercoating.

I have the same problem, but it's mostly from the occational spill somewhere in the car. Where my seat belts attach, there is like a little dip, and moisture collects there, and then there is the imbalance that causes rust. I'm starting to get it on the hood and in my wheel wells as well... I hate rust. The back door is terrible for rain and snow, everytime I open it, my speakers are always at risk. I barely ever open the rear door anymore, too risky :P.

ah yes gotta love it. It's a never ending battle. I took a look at my geo the other day and the there is rust everywhere. I am fighting saltwater from the beach and surf boards and kayaks always dripping everywhere. My soft top header is orange! (there is a magnetic attraction between geo's, sand, and driving through the ocean....trust me!)

Sandblast it off or put some that there POR-15 rust changing super liquid on it .

You may want to consider herculiner...

If the rust is too bad I have heard of this splater weld technique that can redeposit metal..

alas there is always fiberglass...hooo hmmm

I have rust too ;D I slowed it down by removing the carpet and drain plugs so water will drain out when it rains. Of course I run a Bikini top most of the year so it always gets rain inside it. Most of mine is in the rocker panels from mud caking in it and eating away. I use to sand everytime I forun surface rust and the spot paint over it. Now I've given up on the never ending battle and plan on just replacing the body tub when it gets out of control :P There is not much you can do in the land of "there's a slim chance of snow flurries, so lets spray salt all over the road for three days"
