Post by: Ogarac on July 22, 2008, 04:18:07 PM
I just got a 87 sammie. I would like to know what parts I should carry with me on the trail.

87 JX
1.6 liter
31" tires
5" calmini lift
Petroworks t-case

Spare set of U-Joints for the drive lines and a set of drive line/flange bolts.  Toss a Tire Repair Kit (with Tire Plugs) and a small First Aid Kit in your glove box.  Probably in a Zip Lock bag to keep the moisture out.  If your feeling like playing on the safe side a set of spare axles.

I actually made a bag (one of those little ones you can buy for 10 dollars at the parts store) that has two of every wrench size used on the SJ.  That way I can manually tear apart the entire rig while on the trail if needed.  Sure it is a bit slower then using a full Craftsman set, but it weights a lot less, is a lot smaller, and I'm not tempted to steal it to work on other vehicles.  :)

Thanks for the info. I will start gathering the part and some better beer.

* T-case mounts
* Every kind of fluid you can think of
* Chilton manual
* Electrical tape

If you're good at regularly inspecting your vehicle before runs (belts, hoses, etc), you don't need many spares on 31" tires. The weak links are the t-case mounts and u-joints. Both are easy enough to replace. It's important to carry a hammer & proper sized socket for pressing in / out the u-joints. Ask me how I know.

your t case mounts are number 1 problem for breakage ive been through many "guaranteed" "lifetime" sets and decided to run a kung foo grip passenger side arm homeade drivers side arm and custom skidplate that bolts to the case also and i removed all mounts and run mine metal to metal with half inch bolts and nyloc nuts  :o
