Title: extra 10 lb-ft on head bolts, '92 tracker 8v ????
Post by: eschneider on August 12, 2008, 04:53:43 AM
A former GM/Geo tech advised me when reinstalling the cylinder head to torque the head bolts to spec plus an additional 10 lb-ft.

Can anyone confirm?  The tech is a pee-pee head, but I have to admit he's usually right.

why is he a "former GM/Geo tech"?
ever get your torque wrench calibrated? i haven't.
usually specs. will list a final torque range, and i will often use the higher as a guide.
over tightening can cause problems. stripped or broken bolts(studs, nuts) are a pain to deal with.
+10 lbs on head bolts probably wouldn't hurt.
mabe.

It's my understanding consistency is far more important than + / - a few lbs. DON'T use oil (unless manual says to), make sure the passages are cleared of debris & oil by chasing the threads (with a tap) and cleaning out with break-clean & compressed air.
