Title: Tracker drivetrain in Samurai
Post by: rubilooe on September 05, 2008, 07:06:55 PM
I just sold my fairly built Sami ,now I am building a frame up Long Arm rig, I have a 91 Samurai to start no engine or trans all the wiring is uncut and good. My question is this I have a 93 Tracker with a Auto trans and 4x4 . I will also have Toyota axles . Is it the drivetrain from the Tracker a good swap with Toy axles ,I do mean eng, trans and transfer swap . Building crossmembers etc.. not a problem. Any input would be appreciated .Thanks

People run 1.6L engine / trans / t-case combo on toy axles all the time. It's very common. The search you want to do is "SAS" for Solid Axle Swap, and there's lots of info out there for the 1.6L conversion as well. I'm sure someone can pipe in with a good how-to link.

I am confused.  Why does he need to look up SAS when he is starting with a samurai?

One thing some people are doing is mating a samurai tcase directly to a tracker tranny (no intermediate shaft) and with this conversion the samurai tcase ends up in the stock location.  Look up Kicker3

There is a guy over on zuwharrie that is also building them and he is in the US.  There is thread sticky over there you can check out.

He probably suggested looking up the SAS threads for information on mounting Toyota axles to a Tracker drivetrain.

The only issues I can think of is the lack of transfer case gears.  You really only have the one option, but the Kicker 3 setup fixes that rather nicely and gives you the two low range options.

OTT is no longer the only choice.
Rock4xfab is now making a track/kick T-case to samurai.  You send in the track/kick Transfer case and $675, they will modify it and send it back to you with everything to mate it to your samurai's divorced case.  Does not effect drive line length or angle at all.

A guy over at pirate just got one, it looks pretty sweet.
I guess theres no your long wait either!

Oh and will a kick tranny mount in the same location that a samurai tranny would?
Or would there need to be modifications made to a cross member?

A 2wd trackick tranny can use the stock samurai crossmember....new holes have to be drilled in the mount, since the trackick ones don't line up with the existing holes.
A 4wd trackick tranny and tcase hits the stock samurai crossmember.....so it has to be cut out.
