Title: shaking samurai
Post by: Fordota on September 10, 2008, 10:10:05 AM
hey guys just got this thing. never had one before. i am trying to figuer out if my shaking is a samurai thing or what. at about 62-65 it shakes side to side pretty good. cant really feel it in the steering but more the whole vehicle in a side to side motion. i have a toyota on 37's and to me it feels like a tire vibration from big unbalanced tires, except there smaller than the ones on my quad. could those little things be out of balance that bad? any other things to check?

could also be front end parts. if your front end isnt aligned right it will wobble going down the road. but even small tires can get out of balance too.

I agree.

Bad ball joints/tie-rod ends + bad toe = wobble.

Tires out of balance usually cause a shake. If you've got a side-to-side wobble that doesn't effect the wheel, it's likely front end issues.

I checked all front end stuff except alignment yesterday and everything looks really good. Is there a way to check alignment to know if you need to take it to be aligned? I have used straight edges and tape measure on my toyota to get it close. How far off would it have to be to wobble? What I mean is if I checked it would I even notice?

Maybe not. I thought mine was pretty much right on. After installing the lift and adjusting the camber it wandered around a bit, so I took it in for an alignment. Turns out I had the camber right on, but the toe was way off. They fixed that and now the thing rolls down the road like a bumpy dream.
These things have such a short wheel base that any deviation from spec tolerances can make them a little squirrely.

I'd go have it aligned. Even if it doesn't solve your problem the $60 in alignment could save you $200 in tires.   :)
