Post by: crgm101 on September 20, 2008, 12:12:07 PM
I have two broken rear taillights and i don't want to spend $150 dollars on new lights is there a aftermarket street legal solution that will fit a c channel custom bumper that i am planning on making for the lights. i was thinking trailer lights but was told it wouldnt be street legal. thanks for any help.

i saw the rockyroad rear crawler bumper with oval lights but don't know where to get them.

You can use trailer lights.  I am using them currently and I know other people who do with no problems.

yea my friends samurai we have a round bumper on it and we mounted the taillights in his tailgate. we have an advantage because samurai around where i live are very very hard to find so the cops have no idea what the hell there looking at. i have no tag light and i get pulled over at least every 2 months about it and i tell them officer this is how i bought it not sure if it cam with a tag light. not to get off subject but one time i got pulled over with no dash in it and i had my vin number zip tied to the harness in my pocket. i was switching dash's and it started to rain so i had to stop and it was my only drivable car at the time

Yep, just go to your local auto parts store or trailer/truck shop.  I would probably stick with the 6 light setup in the rear:  Brake/running light, Turn Signal, Reverse.  If you want to switch to a two light setup like trailer have (Brake/Running/Turn Signal, Reverse) you will need to get a powered 4wire trailer plug box to put in, then wire that into your tail lights.  If it isn't a powered one (aka, the more expensive one) then your turn signals will act funky whenever you step on the brakes.  Not recommended unless this is a trail only rig.

Wal-mart even sells the oval lights and grommets now.  You will have to get 4 (2 for brake lights, 2 for turn signal lights), unless you get a trailer adapter (as mentioned earlier) and splice it inbetween your existing wiring and the new lights.
"Trailer" lights are perfectly legal to use on vehicles as long as they are DOT approved (which I think they all are.....otherwise they will say something like "for offroad use only").

great advice. with the oval trailer lights can they all be red or do the turn signals have to be yellow. I actually found a brand new pair of stock lights for 60 bucks total. lenses and all couldnt pass up on that deal. looks like i will be driving it soon and thank god because i wont be able to put gas in anything else i own with this shitty economy got to love the zuki !

You can use all red lights, but only if you stick with the two-light system.  If you have the third light it has to be amber.  In order to do the two light system you will need to pick up a 4 wire trailer lights adapter and hack it into the system.   Additionally, if you get the cheap one your rear turn signals will NOT work when your brakes are on.  Spend the extra money and get the powered box if it is going to be a regular sight on the roadways.

Or you can just get the additional two smaller turn signal lights as mentioned before.
