Title: put 2" spacers in front of vitara
Post by: SiKiD_01 on September 14, 2004, 12:24:47 AM
so yeah, i just put in 2" spacers tonight, and now i have zero down travel in my front struts. even though my vitara looks sweet as, now that its levelled out!

bad news is, i am very very poor.

how can i fix this prob with very little $$$, or is it impossible?
i've done strut mount flip, got about half inch down travel.

arrrgggg!!!!! frustration always ends in happiness, well, i like to think so anyway!

Did you already have a lift in the truck in front? Or is the 2" spacers and the strut mount flip all that has been done?

I had that problem when I fitted my spring lift. The handling was terrible as it was lifting the front wheels all the time. You need to make some spacers to drop the top of the strut down, I run 2" spacers with no strut flip. Mine were machined from ally but you could get someone to fabricate some in the style of the Calmini ones.

I'm a great fan of the Brazilian kit ( hmm, Brazilians... ::) - try Deldana.com.br - I bought 2"strut and shock extensions from them - you need to speak Brazilian/Portuguese, but the kit is excellent and so cheap ( complete 2" suspension and 2" body lifts at half the price of other well known brands, including shipping, and a swift service)

I think that they answer emails in English (didn't you tell me that Chris?)

ok, everything is standard on the front, factory strut and coils, then i put 1" coil spacer all round, incl rear.

found some tall coils for the rear at a local wreckers, not sure what they are out of, but give the rear overall lift of about 1.5" - 2", not incl spacer.

so the front had 1" spacer, and the rear had 1" spacer, also 2" coil lift. rear shocks are out of a holden commodore, extend to about 25" i think.

so now i took the 1" spacer out of the front, and put the 2" spacer in. now the strut is at full extension on level road.

i'm going to make some strut extensions, like these:  http://www.rc4x4.com.br/Vitar/Kit%202.html

but this won't be until the week end.  :'( i wont have my vitara for the rest of the week.

just one more thing, i wont need to flip the strut mount is i make a 2" spacer, right?
why i ask is that, the factory front coils are damn hard, and will never allow for the factory strut to compress its entire length. so if i flip the mount, 1", and put a spacer, 2", will it be still ok to drive.

it'll be, 2" lift with spacer, but the strut will be compressed 3". i dont think the strut will bottom out, just thinking if there would be issues with CV angles, and seeing as the strut is longer than the coil lift, the coil won't come loose, right?

If there is a good fabrication facility in one of your neighbors garage, you might want to bribe someone with a 6 pack of their favorite beer in trade for them to make a pair of strut mount spacers that would go between the strut mount and the strut tower. It would be fairly easy to make out of a thick piece of aluminum or steel. Or maybe a piece of steel tubing and a couple of flanges made out of 1/4" steel plate, similar to the ones that come with the Calmini 3" lift.
