I am very new to the suzuki world. I have 2 1988.5 sammys. One with tach one without. Will they interchage easily? What years will interchange? Thanks in advance
-
depends if they both have the same style of dash. My friend bought a tachometer dash for a 1987 samurai, and it was plug and play.

A tach from an 88.5, will only "plug and play" into an 88.5 or 89.

88.5 and 89 are the same as 90 and newer only without the speed sensor in it. And Suzuki never made a tach cluster for 90 up.

I am pretty sure I have seen a 95 with a tach cluster. If they didn't sell one here, It would probably be pretty easy to get one from somewhere else (ebay has a lot of jdm parts for vehicles sold here).

So what does it take to fit a late 80's instrument cluster with a tach into a early nineties Samurai that never had one? I've seen some modified like this, so it must be doable.

You can swap an 88.5/89 cluster into a 90-95 samurai.....from what I have seen, the pinouts are different on the plugs, so some wires will have to be swapped around to work (and a VSS needs to be added to the cluster).
-
It's one of those "call Brent at Trailtoug and ask him" situations. guarantee he'll know. If you need the speed sensor put in it then he can do that.
-
Adding a VSS is easy to do.....you can either swap the whole speedo unit or just swap the actual VSS into the existing speedo. If it isn't covered here, search on zuwharrie, I know it has been covered there.
-
Is the vss the same as the ones on the early 90s Honda civic hatchback? The only reason I ask is because someone gave a cluster from one, and has the vss on it.
-
The sensor itself might be the same, but the wiring for it will be different. You can use one from a Trackick from what I understand.
