I just got a 1996 jx 4x4. I was told I didnt want to go over 3500rpm's, about 60mph. Is this right? I will be fixing it up to take off road soon!

Thats getting pretty close to the rev limiter on a track/Kick.

I drive on the Interstate at 65MPH in 5th doing 4-grand all day in my 1988 Samurai.
3500 is the low end of the peak part of the torque curve where you really feel the engine start to put out power.
Folks who have dealt with American engines all their lives tend to freak a bit at the concept of running an engine past 3-grand all the time. I had a Chevy Blazer with a 4.3 V-6 earlier this year. It kinda suprised me that the Tachometer never read much higher than 2500 on the Interstate.

I sure wish mine could climb hills.... :-\
But it will cruise...if you can call it cruising....on the highway at 4k. I would call it struggling, lol.
Give me a good downhill section and a tailwind and I can bury the speedo and do about 90ish. Some white knuckle driving there.

It took my Dad a while to get used to the Tracker as his hunting rig and wrapping it up. Luckily I had a Metro to break me into 'where is the power band again' years ago. :D

I've seen Zuk's in a mud hole or in the sand bumping it off the rev limiter (6500 rpm's) for what seemed like minutes on end, over and over again.
When I'm in the same I will run it up to close to the limiter just before hitting the hills.
Highway I can run 70mph |removethispart|@ 4300 rpm's. I have 155,000 miles on my engine and it still runs great!

Thanks everyone. Next question is I need a roof rack on the cheap.
