Title: Turbo Kit on eBay
Post by: Z71Edge on December 08, 2008, 06:10:50 AM
I was just messing around on eBay and came across this kit that some of you may be interested in...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TURBO-STARTER-KIT-IMPALA-PRIZM-TRACKER-CAVALIER-BARRETA_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a3Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem350135253922QQitemZ350135253922QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Comes with various piping/couplings, intercooler, T3/T4 turbo, etc. All you need is the proper manifold to fit your setup. The price seemed like a decent deal to me for those looking to add some boost to there setup  8)

Anybody know off hand what manifold will work on a 1.3/1.6 to allow this T3/T4 Turbo to bolt up?

you prolly have to build the manifold from scratch. there are other things to consider though that are a lot tougher to acomplish(engine managment, engine internals, fuel delivery, spark, exhaust, ect). my sugestion is to chat with one of the (few) people here that have went to all the work to make a turbo setup work (one of the recent ones would be bentparts). good luck !

Oh yeah, I know theres alot of other things like you listed to consider for sure. Im personally not interested in doing this to my Tracker...mainly cuz i dont wanna hassle with it as its just my DD/Play toy. Money is kinda an issue too...I work 2 jobs and go to school fulltime :( lol. But it didn't seem like a bad deal for all the piping/couplings/intercooler and turbo that you would need to start with. Thanks for the input tho! Hopefully someone whos looking to do this takes this advice!

I'm slowly working on turboing a rig or two. I can tell you there's no "bolt on" solution, no 'start to finish' writeup (sean & bentparts come the closest), and doing anything 1/2 a$$ed with a turbo is practically guaranteeing a blown engine. The fuel management, spark & header are the hard parts. T4 is WAY too big, and T3 might be too big (there's DOZENS of configurations) creating crazy turbo lag. Expect to easily pay $1,500 all said and done:
* Turbo
* Intercooler
* 100% new exhaust (Custom-built manifold, piping, cat, muffler)
* Fuel management (pumps, injectors, variable fuel delivery / pressure)
* Spark (ECU re-maping or programable ECU, wideband O2)
* Test & monitoring equipment (wideband reader, Dyno tuning)
* Intake piping

Let's not forget you'll have to run hi-octane fuel for the rest of the vehicles life...

Sean Devinny & Aftermarket4x4 did a good wrietup, and may be able to help you with the exhaust manifold.

If I was going to turbo something, it would be a diesel. But then you have to take into account the extra fuel the injection pump has to push to keep up with the extra air the turbo feeds the engine, and that can get expensive. Some injection pumps have a boost compensator, but ones that weren't turbo to begin with don't, and some diesels have a tendency to blow up with a turbo, as in, they were not built for even light boost.

Talking about turbo Gas vs Diesel is comparing apples and oranges. There's a reason most diesel engines are turbo, and most gas engines aren't.
