Will the XL7's V6 bolt up to the Trackick transmission?
-
No ;)
-
No ;)
So, what did you do then to make it fit.... :-/ Or did you put in the XL7 trans and t-case with it. Some more info would be nice ;D
-
I think Eric did the XL-7 Automatic trans with a Kick 4:1 tcase matted to it. There was some problem with the output shaft on the 5 speed XL-7 trans mating to a Kick 4:1.

Yes, more details would be nice, 95XL7, even though this topic has probably been covered before ;)
So, with some modification, Eric was able to get the older style kick case onto the XL7 Trans, or did he just use the 4:1 gearset in the XL7 tcase? Guess I'll just have to wait for some more details on this.
Also, Eric and 95XL7, as many pics as you care to post of such items as your engines, transmissions, tcases, mounting structures for all of the above, and any specific details on the swap would be much appreciated :)

Yes more info on this would nice as I have an Xl-7 and I'm try to find a way to t-case gears.

In brief this is what I had to do to get everything to bolt up with out any adapters. 2.7 XL7 engine to 2.5 GV auto transmission to 1.6 transfercase. This was because I wanted to have crawler gears. The ONLY V6 transmission option that works to date is the 2.5 auto which plugs in directly to the 2.7 brain with no problemo. The 2.5 5-speed, 2.7 auto and 5-speed have different output shafts. The bolt pattern is the same but the shafts are different. So, if someone was crafty they could probably make it work pretty easily.
Hope this helps, Eric

I know, adapterless...but still have slip yokes? barf.
To fix the slip yoke issue there is a company in British Columbia can modify Kick t-cases to be able to bolt up either a Sammy or Toyota t-case behind it.
Dual cases, w/ flanges.
That'd give ya a 2.7L, v6, auto, and to top it, it'd have gears until the end of the earth.
-
Trail Toughs T-case gears will work in the GV t-cases .... So you could take you 2.7l and bolt it up to the GV trans/case combo and you are ready to roll.
-
A home-brew Kicker 3 is probably what I'll be doing to rid myself of slipyokes (with the SAS, that's a requirement)... It's good to know that a 1.6 tcase will bolt up to the 2.5 auto, since I have three cases I can play with :P
What axle ratios did the auto 2.5L XL7 have?

No this is incorrect unless they have two versions of gears. True, the GV automatic has the same output shaft as the 1.6 engines so there is ONE combonation that can use crawler gears but the GV 5-speed and XL7 engines' transmissions have different output shafts that will not go together.

2.7 XL7 autos have 5:13 gears and i believe sticks have 4:62 or 4:88 not sure.
I did my swap as a complete deal with the 2.7 and auto trans/case, i wasn't worried to much about ratio's since my Tracker is mostly on the road.
My Tracker already had 5:13's because it was a 5 speed before.
Headed out to the garage to work on it now. ;D

In looking at the "tech spec" http://www.zukiworld.com/main_departments_techspecs.htm section we find: 5.12 for auto 4.30 for 5-speed.
;D

Well look at that... there's a site outside the forums here ;)
So when I start calling around salvage yards, what I'm looking for is an XL7 2.7L V6 with computer and wiring, and a 4wd Grand Vitara automatic transmission, correct?
Also, automatic GV's came with 4.88 gears, with a Sammy tcase behind a 1.6 tcase, would 5.12s work with 33-35's, or so?
-
I ment take a 2.7l motor and bolt it up to the GV auto like you did.... But you can use the GV t-case aswell if you want... I think you can based off TT add in the home page... When we talked to Brent about installing the 2.5l we were gonna use the motor trans and tcase out fo the GV.
Trail Tough has just released new 4.24:1 Rockmonster gears for the Suzuki Sidekick/Tracker 1991 to 1998 and the Suzuki Vitara and Grand Vitara 1999 to 2001 are here! These gears are manufactured in Japan by the original equipment manufacturer. They provide the same 1 to 1 ratio in high range but your low range operation will be reducted by 134%. SPECIAL INTRODUCTORY PRICE OF $649.00 call 1-877-789-8547 right now!

Right, you could use the GV automatic t-case instead of trying to locate a late model Sidekick t-case.

If you want to do the swap I did, then yes. 2.7 V6 / GV 2.5 auto trans. I'd suggest trying to get similar years. JUST IN CASE!
I think on the gearing question that is a matter of running the numbers and personal taste. For me, I think that would be a little too low for highway driving but I 'd run the numbers and see.
With the V6, there's a paradigm shift :) in the way the rig works. You don't need the super low mega crawl gears to get the rig motivated. For example, I'd like to have a dual case set up not for the ultra-low mega-lightining-babe crawl ratio but for the stock 2.0:1 or something light low. Which would be more useful to me now than ever before.
FWIW, -Eric

It's true, there becomes a point when power over gear prevails.
It's wierd to crawl over something with an auto and have it shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th because you can go that fast, but you've got such low gears, you've got no choice but to let if shift.

Well, I've got a 02 XL7, with auto and 4wd. I've got 2 Toy cases and a single Sami case on the garage floor. Think they could work with the XL7 case? What is the name of the company? I didn't look too hard to see if Hawk's case gears would work within the case but they didn't have any experience with such.
Once I settle down on some other truck projects and the house, the deck, and finally the hottub, I was going to look into getting the front output machined off and add a plate to the stock t-case. Then add the divorce Toyota near the carrier bearing location. Get rid of that and have a little longer rear ds.

OTT Industries is the outfit. They are in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It's a small shop, so sometimes they are a little slow on service/delivery.
We've been using one of their products, the 'Kicker 3', for over a year now. It puts a Sammy t-case behind the kick t-case. It's been fun having dual t-cases, when they work. (For those of you who were in Moab with us.)
But they also have a unit that does toyota t-cases, behind kick t-cases, as well.
I bet that if you asked, they might be able to do a GV or even XL7 case pretty easily.
-
Thanks.
I knew about OTT and some of their products, but don't recall the Suzuki/Toyota case scenario.
But when you mentioned British Columbia, wasn't thinking OTT.....

I think their kicker 2 is the one that uses the Toyota t-case.
