There are two of us with vehicles that have developed a whine that seems to be coming from the transfer case. One is a 92 Tracker and the other a 96 Sidekick. It only does it while not under power (clutch in etc) and it decreases as the speed decreases. Continues to make the whine if the 5 spd transmission is in gear or in neutral.
Have changed the fluids in the transmission and transfer case, but no change to the whine. Looking for suggestions. Thanks.

Is that in two wheel drive or four wheel drive?

This might be not of much help, but if the transfer case is not fully engaged in any setting, it can make a whining sound. Scared the crap out me the first time I heard it and then I noticed it was in between 2H and 4H.

FWIW, here is the troubleshooting info from my '86-'93 Haynes manual for a "noisy" TC:
1. Lack of oil in TC.
2. Noise in 4H and 4L, but not in 2H indicates cause is in the front differential or front axle.
3. Noise in 2H, 4H, and 4L indicates cause is in rear differential or rear axle.
4. Noise in 2H and 4H but not in 4L, or in 4L only, indicates internal wear or damage in TC.

Both are 4 wheel drive units.
I will try the various High and Low ranges and see what I come up with. I have only noticed it in 2H, so with trying in in the various selections hopefully it will tell me how bad off I am. Thanks.

dont put the truck in 4wd with the front hubs locked on pavement! lol
i know u probably already knew that..but i figured id be the ass and say it just because i have seen bad..very bad things lol and the stories sigh lol

What kind of gear oil did you use? and weight of it? does it only whine when hot or cold also?(driving time hot)

I dont remember but all the trackers and samurais i had made funny noises in four wheel. I wouldn't worry about it.

When it is cold "relative term" there is no noise, but after it warms up is when you get the whine. We changed the fluid in the Sidekick but I do not remember what gear oil we used. The Tracker I have done nothing so far.

Ummm, I hope you mean don't do this and make any sharp turns, right?
I try to put mine in 4wd at least once a month (even if I'm on pavement) just to keep things moving in the TC and the front diff, but as long as I don't try too sharp a turn I don't understand what is wrong with this :-/

BTW, what kind of shape do you think your clutch is in?

You probably need to change your TC oil.
Make sure you use 80-90W gear oil only.

I have not had my sidekick apart yet so not sure how fine of teeth they have but the samurai teeth are small and do whine after about 30 miles of driving, I just let off of the gas every now and then on long trips to let a little more oil between the teeth and I have about 7k miles on my new gear set on my x-fer case and the whine has not changed pitch or anything, my other sammie with the stock case does not seem to be as loud but does not get the same use or tire size, tsl's are not light ;D p.s. your x-fer case should be by-passed when in 2wd and i'm not sure but all of the gears in it should not even be spinning so it could be your trans?

Are they lifted?If so what type, how much ect. More info please.... Is it possible your rear driveline is out of sinc? or possibly too much angle. Its easy to mistake it for a t case noise.

I think the clutch is in good shape. Both units pull real good and there is no slippage.

Neither the Sidekick or Tracker are lifted.
This coming weekend, I am going to take the suggestions made so far and see what I can determine. I have a feeling that it is normal wear and tear and if changing the fluids to a 80-90w doesn't help we will live with it. Appreciate all the help and suggetions and we will see what happens.
