on a 87' sammy is it easier to drop the tranny or pull the motor? how long should it take? any thing i should get other than the clutch kit this is not the first one that I've done just the first in a sammy

I'd just drop the tranny......easy to do and can be done by hand (remove the intermediate shaft, remove the engine to tranny bolts/nuts, take out the rear tranny mount bolts, unhook the backup lights and 5th gear switch connectors, lay under it, lift it up slide it back and drop it out).
Make sure the clutch kit comes with a replacement throwout bearing and pilot bearing.....if it doesn't, get them.
I'd replace the rear main engine seal while you're in there....easy and cheap to do.
Make sure to have the flywheel turned too.
I'd figure on a half day to full day, as a good estimate.

thanks

I tried to drop the box on my 413 and couldn't get it out, I ended up pulling the motor.

I think I had to remove the starter motor too, but... yeah, wasn't that hard. Much easier if you have a friend.

Yeah, the starter (or at least the 2 starter bolts) has to come out too.

There is a trick to make dropping the tranny easier......search for "notching transmission crossmember" and it will explain and possibly even show some pics.....if the info isn't on here it is on zuwharrie.

The tranny can be "bench pressed" out (unless you are a small "stick boy"). ;D

I am a stick but but put a NP435 in my f250 by my self weeks ago i think i can handle this tranny just wanted no surprises on the weight

There are two seals that you should replace, or at least examine, while it's apart: the engine rear main seal behind the flywheel and the shaft seal at the front of the transmission. Mine was leaking oil from the tranny and dripping out onto the driveway. I though it was the rear main seal, but found that the transmission front seal was almost brick hard! If the clutch lining rivets are already dragging on the flywheel, you may have to have that resurfaced.
