Title: 1.6 power?
Post by: Dazookster on January 09, 2009, 07:21:45 AM
I was wondering what are the power ratings of the 1.6 8 valve, 1.6 16 valve, and the stock Samurai engine? Torque and HP.Thanks.

The Sammy depends on your market, the numbers I have is 65hp/69lb.  But it changes from place to place/documentation.

I believe the 16v is 95hp/94lb?.  Not sure on the torque, but it is close to the hp rating.

1.6 8V is 80bhp +/- a couple.

If you're thinking about engine swaps, the hot new thing is the 2.0L - not much more $$$, but 30% more HP & torque (about 135 hp & ft lbs). Sean Devinney has a kit over at aftermarket4x4.com

He also has a writeup if you want to read and do it on your own.

I have an idea I was thinking about putting a mild cam in the 8 valve 1.6 how would that compare to the 16 valve?  I'm sure it would make it torquey which would be nice for the trail and highway.  Is anyone here running a mild cam in either there 1.3 or 1.6 is it alot better than stock?

Cams / timing changes just move the HP & Torque up and down the RPM range. You'll technically get less HP & Torque (by the conventional measurement of "peak" power), but if you move the HP & Torque to where it's more useful... then who cares?
