Title: Loud air noise
Post by: rakkasan on September 02, 2004, 03:50:37 PM
89 Tracker...Has anyone experienced a loud air rushing noise that starts at around 30 mph., and sounds like it's  coming from the upper dash area. I taped over the six holes under the hood on the upper  firewall that I assume is the vent air intake,,That didn't do it. There aren't any holes in the firewall that could cause it..
Opening and closing all the dash controls doesn't help.
Opening the window slightly doesn't help.???????????

if you have a bug sheild on it that would do it, even the factory ones like I had on my toyota trd was real noisey.

Nope, no bug sheild,, Maybe if I took the windshield out,  I wouldn't notice the noise?? ::)

when I have noises I just turn up the Radio and that seems to take care of the noise untill the next time I drive with the radio off. It is wierd how turning up the volume on the radio fixes all the noises.

did you try putting the top back on ;D ;D

Seriously though try checking the windshield for leaks. I had a really bad wind noise in my work car and was able to isolate it to the seal around the windshield.

The easiest way for me to find out, is to go for a drive with a buddy and have him move his fingers around the edge of the windshield while you hear the noise. Either he will feel the air or the noise will change when he gets close.

Give it a try, or take it to your local windshield place they may have a ultrasonic divice that could do the same. Not sure if those work on convertibles though.

Good luck

:-[ :-[ OK..I found it,, and boy what a dummy!! It turned out to be the seal between the hard top where it meets the top of the windshield frame..I took it up to the airport, pointed into a thiry mile wind, parked it and started searching..Still sounded like the console area, but I shook and jiggled evey damn thing in there and finaly hit on it..So another mystery solved..Thanks for the input!!!... :D :D

I was going to suggest checking the piece of weatherstripping where the top of the firewall meets the back of the hood, but, I'm glad you found the source.
