Title: Which calipers do I need to run 15" on a Vitara?
Post by: olija on February 01, 2009, 11:52:31 AM
I read on here that 2nd gen Chev Trackers have 15" rims and therefore have a different caliper than the Vitara and Grand Vitara. I bought some 15" rims yesterday and tried grinding my calipers down a bit to try clear the rims but it's not going to work, safely. I'm just wondering which year/model of Tracker caliper I need to get or if they are all identical. Thanks

get your lift in yet?

are you sure the 15 inch stock zuki rim isnt made to clear the caliper? rather than the caliper being any different?

OR do the the v6 trackers, gv's and xl7's have bigger brakes, thus bigger calipers and an need for a 16 inch rim?

mopack and lordco both sell a universal wheel spacer that just goes behind the rim (i think its like 1/8 or 1/4 inch or something, i dont know how much you need, but maybe worth a look, we needed them on the wife's jetta once to clear the strut.

My 01 V6 Tracker only has the 15" rims. I haven't run across a Tracker with 16" rims, just the GV's.

Darn, I hate it when you read something on the internet and then try it in real life and it doesn't work, and then try and find it back and you can't find it. AKA I hate feeling like an idiot! I looked on rockauto.com for some parts numbers on 01 Trackers, 01 Vitaras, and 01 Grand Vitaras and the Tracker and Vitara is the same part number...GV is different. Guess I PROBABLY should have looked that up BEFORE, eh?

Hopefully a 1/8" spacer will solve the problem...

Lance, No, I don't have my lift on yet. It would look pretty stupid to have a 2" body lift, 2.5" suspension lift, and skinny little 26" tires. That's not the only reason though, I'm trying to find a Sidekick Sport 1.8L front passenger side CV for my front diff swap, not having any luck though so I am going to order one through Hawk, I think.

You can make a hybrid axle using part of a track/kick axle and your Vitara axle. This is very easy to do.

I was going to mount up 15's to my XL-7 using standard Vitara discs and calipers. Decided against it becasue the bigger one's I have now wear down pretty quickly already and the smaller one's might be too overtaxed. for the weight of the vehicle and the increased tiresize/weight. I ended up using the stock 16's with 1" Spydertrax spacers front and rear running 265/70/16 BF AT's.

Yeah, I thought about that, and decided it would make a lot more sense to stick with the intended brakes for the vehicle rather than downgrading it to Sidekick parts. I am going to order some 1" Spidertrax spacers for the front and see how the tires clear once I have my lift on.

I know, I just had a real hard time finding a Japanese-built 96-98 Sidekick, so I just went ahead and ordered the whole Sport shaft. In for a penny, in for a pound!

15x7 Unique 297 (aka Cragar 397) "Soft 8"...really nice simple looking black steel wheels. 4" backspacing.  I probably only need 1/4" of spacing to make it work, but unfortunately Lordco doesn't sell any 5 on 5.5 spacers and ebay hasn't got anything that thin.

I brought the Kragar wheels back and picked up some stock Sidekick wheels off craigslist for less than half the price. If I don't like how it sits or if the 31's rub the frame I'll just get some 1" wheel spacers.
