Title: Just thought I'd be helpful.
Post by: idaholwb on August 31, 2004, 12:49:58 PM
I just thought I'd be of a technical aid for the miscellaneous lift questions that I've seen people have on here over the last little while.
Some things that you need to address on different types of lifts. Keep in mind these are basic answers to different quesions, yes they are Suzuki type answers.
First off body lift. The main reasons people put body lifts on their trucks, is because of tire clearance or their is just not a lift, or big enough lift available for their truck. Things you need to address are the steering shafts, brakeline mounts, a/c lines, bumper covers, shifters.
Next off, suspension lifts. The biggest reason people go this route is bigger tires, more ground clearance, and more wheel travel. Things you need to look at for this are steering, shocks(mounts), brakelines, drivelines.
The most common reason that people lift their trucks is to put bigger tires on it. You need to remember that a bigger tire means that the tire is taller and travels more distance per revolution, which means you need to regear the axles according to the size tire you use. It also means that the tires are heavier, that means that the tires are also heavier than the little things that the truck came with. That means that more power is required to turn the tires, more than just gearing is needed. Simple things like putting a header and bigger exhaust, high efficiency air filter(i.e. K&N), hotter ignition coil, bigger motor(?), and make sure that the engine is running like it is supposed to in the first place.
Hope that answers a few questions.

also bigger heavier tires increase the unsprung weight, and shocks need to be properly selected too.

A good suspension lift will still compress as much as the original so you won't gain any extra room for tyres. Stiffer springs won't compress so much but you loose travel.

Kimball. You need to get off your butt and go wheeling more so we can understand you better. This is all smooshed up and misspelled and your grammar sucks! Just what ARE you trying to get across here for n00bs? Don't MAKE me post a picture of your planter out front! (oh, I'm gonna hear if for that)

The FJ80 is the leaf sprung 'Cruiser, isn't it?

I believe it's coil

91-97. ..

93+ is when they started adding the FF and the rear disc.

Oh, BTW, you see my camping pics on the other forum? *another poke*

Yah, I know you had to work.

Yes I saw the pics, bastards. Rubbing it in my face. But at least I actually got something accomplished on the lwb. More in the last 2 weeks than in the last 3 months. At this rate, I might be able to start it in like a month or so, start and drive that is.
Pretty cool, huh? ;D

It would look more 'redneckish' if idaholwb would plant flowers in the front seating area and turn the backside into a koi fish pond....so's he'd be able to go fishing when he's bored.(poke)

anyone think a chevy v6 is enough power to turn some 40+'s with the right gearing? Also used on the daily driven streets?

Only if you use the stock axles :o
