Title: Computer Failure???
Post by: skibum on February 04, 2009, 06:33:52 AM
Hi everybody.  New to the site but not to Suzukis.  I bought a low mileage 96 Tracker a few months ago so that I could put my Jeep away for the winter.  Everything's been going great until last night but this one's got me stumped.  I have a long drive home and shortly after starting the vehicle the ABS light came on,  a little while later, the BRAKE light also came on followed shortly by the AIRBAG light.  Then the radio died.  The Tracker was still running fine however and I still had a half an hour to get home so I kept driving.  Well, ten minutes later it started running like crap (couldn't get above 40-45 mph) but I did manage to limp home.  Shut it off and went in for a drink.  Long story short, I came out this morning and I've got nothing........no lights, no start......nothing.  Any ideas.  ???

Your alternator is toast. Your warning lights started coming on when voltage to them dropped then the bad running when the battery drained and she kept limping home on a bad alt. pumping out low voltage.

You should be able to charge the battery for a little while ant it start back up (but not run for long). Be sure to have the battery tested too. Sometines a low drain on one will toast the battery too.

HTH,

No ALT or CHG light though, or anything else that directly indicates a charging problem.  Weird.

I don't think I've ever in my life had the pleasure of an ALT or CHG light telling me when my alternator or battery were slipping away.  An ammeter once tried to warn me, but I failed to look down at it in time.

Make sure that your belt is tight before you blame the alt.  If it is, bring the alt to one of the major national parts stores that offer free alt checks.  That will tell you for sure if it's the alt or whether you have to search further.

Good point on the belt. I broke one in winter once on my 97 and did not notice till the charge dropped (motor was still running cool in the 30 degree temps, just a little warm at interstate speeds).
