Love my New 1997 LSI Tracker but EVERYTIME i start her Up the Belts or Belt Makes a God Aufull Screaching noise.
It stops abit when i put the Tracker in Reverse. but is still there till i reve it up as i drive Away the sound Stops Dead!
Now its Got Power stearing so it could be that belt or the ALT belt i checked they seem set up tight enough.
It does this whenever i stop at a Stop sign ect or go to the Store When im slowed down.
I tryed rubbing Soap on the Belts didnt help  Ya well anything was worth a try its God aufull noisy.
So is it Belts or a Pully or What ??? Im stumped.
Should i spray oil on the Belt pullys?
-
my 96 did the same thing. i thought it was the pullys but i went ahead and changed the belts and it hasnt done it ever since.
-
belts, and no belt dressing doesnt work hahaha spend a few bucks and replace them. should take care of it
-
belts, I can make mine stop squealing by turning off the fan
-
also make sure they are the right size . not just length also width

'course, he just took 3-years off your alternator's bearings..

+1 wouldnt go back to a mechanic that used a pry bar to apply a belt, it should take zero effort to install, thats why they make an adjustment bracket for an alternator..... put it on..... then force it tight then tighten down the adjustment. using the correct belt.

ok so the Suzuki mech is wrong and you two dips are right my bad atleast my $hit dont squeak!!!
-
I always use a pry bar, I find it the easiest way to hold the alternator/PS pump out when tightening the bolts. I just don't push on it hard and I check the belt free play afterwards.

using a pry bar to hold the alternator is one thing, the way i read that post he used a smaller belt so had to use the pry bar to get it past the pulley?

Exactly. What I'm saying is that nothing will kill an alternator better than overtightening the belt. Well, except for submergence in mud or water. And hammers. And .50 caliber rounds.
It sounded in his description that the mechanic tightened the hell out of that belt.

Said Suzuki mech fixed your symptom just fine. Happy customer! Plus, hey, another few bucks when you need the new alternator put on. Win-win!

LOL ;D well i have used a Pry bar to on my Big Ford Truck to tighen the Belt on my Alt.
It sounds bad but its just a Lever to get the Alt to come over nice and Easy also gives you a free hand to use a wrench on the Ajustment nut to tighten it up.
Prybar or a piece of Pipe works to but a pry bar is the Right shape to get in there.
I was told by a Local Mechanic to Tighten the Belts. My belts look new and seem fairly tight.
I will buy a new Set replace em and keep theses ones as Spares tho.
Haveing Spare Belts under the seat aint a Bad thing to have i figger.

Wow. I haven't been that sensitive since, well, probably since before I discovered the lingerie section of the Sears catalog.
But, enough of the scary internets for me today. Time to get back into my protective bubble now, too.

Well Its FIXED ;D
I went out and once i got the Big black Canister thing outa the Way it was very easy to Tighten the ALT Belt i used a BIG screw driver to Pry the ALT over while i tightened the ALT Ajustment Nut up Snug.
Started up the Tracker and the Noise was Gone!!!!!!!!! What a Diffrence!

Outside of unexplained knocks/pings, belt squeaks are the worst. Followed closely by brake squeaks, which, although sometime normal, embarrass the hell out of me.
Glad for you that it's gone. But....still hope you didn't overtighten anything. Further, though....nobody on this thread has said some peace of mind isn't worth an alternator every few years, either way.

fixed f u
Hey! You're back!
Something to consider.. Re your mech's advice, wouldn't it make some measure of sense to adjust the new belt to normal, non-bearing-stressing tension and then, when/if it does stretch, to then readjust the tension to normal, non-bearing-stressing tension again, rather than over tightening it to begin with?

Better free advice. Don't take advice from someone who's livelihood depends on your vehicle breaking down.
