Title: throttlebody spacer

Has anyone used a throttle body spacer,  was there any improvement? I have a 92 sam. soft top with a K&N filter other than that its stock. I will be adding a header and bigger pipes soon. Tire size 205/75/15. I have added custom bumper front & rear. The tub, finder flares, and lower areas have been Dur bak.  Dale

You should gain .02 HP with it. You would be better off putting that money in your gas tank IMO.

True....but if you bolt enough power add-ons to your engine....you could net up to 10 horsepower!!!

That's quite a lot considering we start with what...80?

I think stock they're 65 HP. Seriously. IF you're in a non-smogNAZZI state, modify or loose the stock carb:

The holley's way more $$$ than it's worth.

For the $$$ you need to spend to get 10 HP out of the stock 1.3L, you could have paid (or come very close to paying for) a 1.6L or 22r(e) swap. You'd have more power & better gas mileage with either engine swap - you'll have WORSE gas mileage by trying to make the G13A go fast. It's a turd. Don't dump money in it unless you have to. Save the $$$ for a engine swap.

Agree.

But there is an instance in which that is not the case...or practical...or possible.

People like me...slightly poor...less tools...less knowledge.  We don't have access to shop equipment or 22r engines, and can't perform an engine swap...so all we can do is spend a few bucks here and there for some cool bolt on parts that may eventually lead to that 10HP net gain.   

In my particular case...I've bought and installed Calmini's stainless steel headers for my 1.6 liter fuel injected engine.  Probably an insignificant power increase alone...but if I find some loose change under the seat...I may afford an intake or free flowing cat in the spring.   ::)


People like me can only DREAM of ever having the coveted 22re powering their offroad, or onroad, car or truck.  But man...can I dream......

I have a Rotational Dynamics TBI spacer.  I dunno how much or if it added anything, as I added a LOT of other mods at the same time (cam, header, hybrid TBI)

But, I can say, "I got a TBI spacer"! :laugh:

Bolt-ons for the 1.3L ranked by my thoughts on best bang for buck & difficulty:
* CAI (only because it's so cheap & easy) or DIY snorkel

* Modify or ditch the stock carb (this is BY FAR the most restrictive part of the engine, and carb mods can be done for 'free' with hand tools)
* Cat-back exhaust (2-2 1/4")
* High-flow cat
* Headers
* Cam (only if you want power higher or lower in the RPM range)
* Port matching (this could be higher on the list because it's so cheap to do, but the other work needs to be done before you'd see any real gains from it)
* Head work (machine shop high-flow magic)
* Under drive pulley & adjustable cam sprocket

The header can get some good gains, but it's not what I'd do first (I start with the most restrictive systems and work towards the least restrictive). The biggest restriction is the pipe size & stock exhaust can.

If you've got the tools & place to do the above bolt-ons, I don't see why you wouldn't have the resources to do an engine swap (I can rent engine pickers around here for a few $$$ a day). Calmini header alone is $260 + Tax + S&H. I see 22re's going for $500 (asking price, so they'll go lower) every few days between pirate, craigslist & other Toyota 4x4 boards. Just food for thought.
