Title: XL-7 on 33's.........Grocery Getter project
Post by: sir lance on February 12, 2009, 05:30:10 PM
02' XL-7 , family machine.......Wife's Daily Driver

I was getting pissed off with jeep liberty's having bigger tires than my zuk...... :-[

So being the sick in the head people that we are, that cant leave a damn vehicle stock:

We just did a coil spacer  / 3" body lift and fit a set of 33" TRXUS muds with 15" eagle alloys on it with front Spidertrax 1" wheel spacers.

Before:

After:

Some plastic trimming req'd, not too noticeable......

I ended up having to do a bit more trimming than i had wanted, due to the fact that i didn't  end up making a full 3 inch susp lift like i had done on my GV, it only ended up being about 2.5", witch is fine, because my sway bar, cv's and tie rod ends are at a better angle now.

with that being said, i did have to do some inner sheet metal work in the front and a tad bit in the back (with a hammer as bad as it sounds), un less you are willing to do that, i don't recommend anyone try and fit 33's this wide and with this kind of a backspace wheel.  i don't rub at all on the frame, but the catch is, the further the tire sticks out, the more its going to hit the outer part of the fender and trim parts in the sweep of the turn.

if i had gone with a 33x10.5 tire and a more of a stock offset wheel, i don't think the trimming would have been as bad, but it would have hit the frame big time.

they do rub from time to time if I'm at full crank, and hit a good bump on an angle or strange situations like that, all I'm going to do now is let it be for a  while and watch for rub marks and clearance from there, i didn't want to do too much at once, and wind up doing more than i had to.

as far as the plastic goes, its just a matter of drawing out the lines with masking tape, and using a thin zip disk and an 4.5inch angle grinder, all i did was try and follow the factory body lines with the tape before i cut to try and keep it looking stock, or at least tasteful. what i may do is install the factory front and rear mudflaps, this will cover up most of the work that was done. but for the most part I'm happy with it.

15x10
-46 mm off set
3 5/8 back space

with a 1 inch spacer to clear the calipers (+ a bit of grinding)

I did much the same as you did, Except I'm only going for 31" tires. I will however have lots of wheel travel room opposed to the 33's. Here are some pics of my fender trimming:

Trimmed the seam
(http://home.comcast.net/~polosport8/InnerFenderCut.JPG)

Folded it back and filled in with liquid metal
(http://home.comcast.net/~polosport8/InnerFenderCut2.JPG)

Painted with rustoleum, this is not the finished product As I have since painted the entire inner fender and coated with some heavy dudty rubberized protectant.

Hey
that XL-7 looks pretty sick man, only thing i would change is the trimming. I think you need to trip exually all around the wheel well to get the best look. Its what I did to stuff 35's under my tracker, looked much better than just the bottom edges..

i was kinda thinking the same thing when i did it, but the problem is, that thats how most of the flair is held onto the body, that and the gap that would show after the inner lip of the flair was cut off, may not look so good either. and given the amount of room i have up top, no real need for clearance.

do you have pics of your truck on 35"s?

Oh i wasent aware of the design characteristics on the fender flares, i understand though. I dont have any pictures of it when it was on those, was only for about 3 months and I couldnt handle the lack of power, i hat trouble getting to 50 km in-between stop signs! Only pictures I have are from when I got it, and it had 235's on it. They are on right now as its winter, and their best in snow and we get alot here.  hopefully 31-33's in the spring!

i hear ya on the power, i have a sidekick on 37's dual tcase , witch is great offroad, but no highrage reduction for the street, so i have a 2.5 v6 going in this winter if all goes well.

I trimmed my fender flares all around and and now all that's holding them on is the white clips. I'm most likely going to have to rivet the flares on from the inside of the fender to keep them on, but other than that, no problems. I'll take some pics tomorrow of the enlarged fender opening. Funny thing is that running 31's with a 1 inch spring spacer and a 2 inch body lift, I'm still rubbing the firewall with tires when turning, and I have 1" spidertrack spacers all around. Looks like I'll have to give the firewall a few well placed hits with the sledge.

Took me a few minutes to find this thread again.  Just wanted to thank sir lance and 2K1USGV for the pics of their fender and bumper trimming.  Had some minor rubbing issues mounting up the new 31's post-body lift, and thanks to your pics, I new what to trim w/ some degree of confidence.  Plenty of clearance on top; just not enough at the bottom corners.  It should be out of the shop on Monday.  I'm having the tailgate broken down and reinforced to take the extra weight of the 31" spare.  I'm usually bad at posting pics, but it looks too good not to.  Stay tuned. ;D

hahaha no problem....glad i could help, and for what its worth....i had a 31" spare on my old GV, and it JUST cleared the top of the rear bumper when shutting the door, so if your doing work to the back gate anyway, see if you can raise up the carrier a bit, or at least modify the tire mount surface up so you can fit a larger tire.

You can slot the holes on the rear carrier, and move the mount up 3/4".  That's what I did.
