Title: Manual Hubs not engaging
Post by: Jarrodl on August 24, 2004, 07:24:04 AM: I have a 90 tracker and my drivers side hub sometimes doesn't engage. The switch turns fine, it just doesn't lock. I have pecked on it with a wrench and made it engage. It is a factory manual hub. Does it need cleaning? could there be something else wrong?

Post by: Jarrodl on August 24, 2004, 07:58:13 AM: What has to be taken off to clean them? I guess the wheel has to be taken off, but what else? Do the allen head bolts around the hub need to be removed? Does the rotor and wheel bearing have to come off?

Post by: 1bigtracker on August 24, 2004, 08:12:32 AM: their are like 6 12MM?? bolts around the base of the hub. take those off and take the hub off the CV. then CAREFULLY disassemble the hub, clean all the rust and what not out of it, gease and reassemble.

personally I like to give it a bath in the solvent tank so I take em off completely

I got stuck. Actually, I got out and looked at my front axles. The one on the passenger side wasn't turning, and the one on the drivers side was turning and the wheel was not. I pecked it with a wrench and when it engaged, I got out of the mud no problem.

same thing happened to mine.

i didnt take the wheel off, i took the switch out, with internals, and then i took the outer hub off. cleaned all in solvent, (i used diesel), it was mainly rust that stop the internals sliding. make sure that the spring is in place, (connected to the spline ring, and the switch)
my spring also come off the spline ring, this meant that when it engaged, it would disengage.

make sure to grease it up properly, but not to pack it full of grease, as it wont work then. also, some people cut out a gasket/seal when replacing, but i found that was a waste of time, as any type of water crossing/mud will enter the hub through the switch.

this is something i do when i get my vitara serviced. engine oil, air filter, etc.

its straight forward. just do it.
