Title: New Head gasket and valve job
Post by: xkmail on February 24, 2009, 04:28:19 PM
my 1990 tracker was overheating, checked new radiator, thermostat OK, water pump works fine.
Tore off head today in about 4 hours, took over to shop to have pressure checked, then hot tank, resurface if needed and valve job $150~.
Timing belt looks in ok condition not cracked and no real leaks so i may put that back together as-is?
Can I reuse head bolts?
Here are some pics.

Quick addition, anyone have any notes on brands of head gaskets better than the other?

Gaskets are better be taken from origina partsl, meaning Suzuki's gaskets, or L-ring but this is here in Europe.

Little off

I thoght we have a terrible fuel in Ukraine, but after I saw your pictures... ???... I'm starting to think that everything is not so bad in my country.

xkmail, can you tell me your mileage on this engine? What oil are you using? Draw attention to the intake manifold and pistons there's a lot of fouling.

my Suzuki mech said he only replaces the head bolts when they break so thats what I did also I got a used head with 30000 from Hawk for only $200. they were real helpful ask for William in Parts

xkmail, first of all you should buy at least one new head bolt and then compare it's sizes to your old ones. Sometimes old bolts are good, sometimes not, especilly if bolts were overtighten. In case of overtighting some bolts might get to thin and a bit longer, it is easily obtained even with an eye.

When I was building my engine, I've replaced only 4 bolts, rest was fine.

When did taking a head off become the fix for an overheating problem?
