Ok it is a 96 with a 16 valve 1.6l it looks like. I bought from a 55 year old woman who had owned it for the last ten years. It had 58k when she got it and in ten years she only put 14k miles on it!
I doubt much maintenance has been done to it. So, where do I start? If the timing belt goes, will it scrap my valve train like a Honda?
What are the tallest tires I can put on it with out modification?

The VERY first thing you do is resell it to me. 8)

Yeah, it's an interference engine, 60k timing belt maintenance... ie it's time if it hasn't been done. I'm in the same boat, bought ole lady owned 68k tracker... no maintenance but clean. Awaiting gates t-belt kit.
Tires = 235/75r15 with no lift. G/l with it. :)

Lol, with tidy profit to boot!! ::)

All jokes aside...... What are these things going for price wise?
-
Acually, I dont think it is a interferance motor. The answer here is that the service manual is wrong. There is a guy that tried it, and nothing hits. I asked in a thread a couple weeks ago, and nobody has ever had damage while breaking a belt.

Kelly Blue Book prices for my area are.
Condition, Excellent $2,190
Good $1,965
Fair $1,615

Well, thanks for telling me what a dealer (rapist) gives for trade in value but what I really wanted to know is what they actualy sell for?

first thing you do is take that bra off
it ruins paintjobs
(or it has already ruined your paintjob)

I agree! Set those puppies free . Just kidding, if you want to lift it, I think my kit will fit. ;)

How deep do I have to tear into the motor to inspect the timing belt?
-
It's a non-interference motor. Many many many people have verified this when tearing down their engine. Inspect everything you can think of, and swap out every fluid you can think of (don't forget the often neglected break, coolant, diff / trans / t-case fluids etc). Inspect anything that looks rubber. A lot of people are quick to replace things without inspecting them... I'm not. I'll check out the plugs, wires, cap etc. If they look questionable at all, I swap 'em out. If not, I clean 'em up and move on with my life.

FYI, for an X-90 noob ;) Most any modification/aftermarket items for a similar year Sidekick/Tracker will work on the X-90. Some need some minor tweeking but most everything is the same (besides the body and some basketry and exhaust pieces to make it fit in the smaller engine compartment. Do a search in the for sale section for posts made by me 'zukipilot' and you will find where I had my 98 up for sale a few years ago. It had a clamini 2" lift but I ran the same size tires I ran with no lift (did not want to cut fenders). That post should have the size tire I ran. It fit tight but the only trimming I had to do was on the bumper cover.
HTH,

I just found the coolest thing ever in the trunk of my new X90...... A used timing belt!!!!! >:D
The woman I bought it from actualy had it factory serviced!

Step 1 is make it look like this.

The suspension part anyway

What is the best way to spend a few hundred bucks and get a little more power out of this thing?
Exhaust?
Intake?
-
Header will help, but the people doing it report the best "seat of the pants dyno" claim short ram intake, high flow cat & cat back exhaust are the best bang for the buck. You'll want 2" - 2 1/4". If you have a dremmel, spending a little time on port matching can't hurt, and won't cost you anything. You can play with moving the timing a couple degrees and see how that works out for you. Some people report bette accelleration by advancing the timing to 7*. I don't really notice much difference when I do it. And, get all the weight out of the vehicle you reasonably can.
-
"And, get all the weight out of the vehicle you reasonably can."
I guess my fat ass has to go on a diet then... lol
Thanks for the info.
What intake kits fit this?
What I mean is..... I've read that some are "going with the cheap Honda" kits.......?
-
Hey, I'm on a diet ::) But, a lot of people carry "junk" in their car. A couple hundred pounds of extra gear floating around in the back adds up. Ever notice you don't accelerate up hill as fast with a friend in the passenger seat? Same thing...
A lot of people make their own from their favorite local parts store (they often run sales on those things), or eBay. It's really a short-ram intake, not a CAI. What's on your rig now is a CAI, but the piping runs into the box, down the inside of the engine compartment, out through the firewall, and back up to the front of the vehicle (between firewall & fender) behind the turn signal. The intake at that point is SILLY narrow. Between that, and all the twists & turns... it's actually better to run the short ram in the warm engine compartment. I have a pic of what the intake looks like, I just have to find my darn camera....
You can do a snorkel too - which IS a CAI, and if facing forward is a ram intake. It's hard to keep it from looking ghetto if you DIY though, and the ARB one is like $300 I think ??? It looks SWEET though.
-
Thanks! I actualy might snorkel it. I'm prety handy with a hole saw and a dremel tool.
I checked the factory piping and it is a joke. Reminds me of trying to get a McDonalds milkshake through a stir straw.......
Any issues wit removing the cat? I live in an area that does not require emissions testing 8)
-
Not sure but If theres an o2 after the cat you might get a "low cat efficiency" code, which may turn on the engine light. Just a possibility. :-\ ???
-

It's super-bad for the environment to completely delete it, and doesn't give much improvement when compared to a cheap (sub $100) high-flow cat. Some people have reported that a lack of any backpressure causes a big loss in low-end torque... high flow cats seem to be where it's at.
-

You need the cats backpressure to run the egr right, or you'll be throwing p0400 code constantly. Ive heard good & bad about the high flow cats, seems 'most' can use em w/out issues though.

-
If you do not have to pass inspection your rig will run 100times better with the cat off. And about the egr just block it off too. All it will do is make your check engine light come on.
-
X90's in San Diego.
-
Not sure how my 1.6L engine could be "superbad" for the enviornment in any configuration but I do hate having a check engine light. I'm anal about things like that.
-
Don't punch holes in that nice X90. If money is tight, leave the motor alone 4 now & look into suspention. Calmini 3" is going to be best "bang for the buck"! Built more X90s than anyone I know "www.generationx90.com " and things like "snorkels" should be on the other end of your list. That is if you plan to off road with the rest of us. Body parts are rare for that X.
-
any one knows who makes the rear spare tire bumper combo? yes I did a search!
-
All tubes are custom. I designed all the bars, bumpers, rock sliders ect. & are one offs on all generatione x90 suzuki's. I will post a few picks later as they are on my lap top.
-
The most off road use this thing will see is some desrt dirt roads and dunes. I mainly want to pull a little more HP/torque out of the engine and make the stance a bit more aggressive.
I was joking about the snorkel ;) I'm sure one of you would hurt me if I trashed this thing. Hell, I only paid 1500 bucks for it >:D
Probably all accademic anyway...... The Longer it sets in the driveway...... the more my old lady talks about how cute it is. Wich I am sure is leading up to her driving it.
-
It'll perform fine in the desert / dunes stock... in fact, arguably it will perform best in stock form. Maybe some bolt-on intake / exhaust stuff and call it done. Unless you're brave enough to do a 2.0L swap, or turbo install to help keep the wheel speed up.

I put a 2" Calmini Lift and 1.5" wheel spacers on mine and called it good. It did great on terrain like the desert back roads. I use to get a kick out of running gravel and dirt roads up at Windrock ATV area and drifting corners. The best part was catching up to ATV's and honking to have them let you buy >:D The look on their face when a little red tennis shoe with tinted windows passed them with the driver sitting in nice cool AC was priceless.

And, yes - passing quads is fun
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i246/Jeremiah_Junkins/Camping/2008/Winchester%20Bay/WinchesterBayMay08043.jpg)
This was one of two runs (second gear pegged). The bastards didn't get the second jump on film (4th gear pegged)... Look on the quad runner's faces: :o

That was on stock 27" street tires, and my 1.5" OME lift. OME is the way to fly... literally. Going to be a WAY better suspension than the Camlini for the money. It softly eats up jumps, sand dunes, whoops & fire roads at high speed.
