Title: Water Pump Leak?
Post by: one mile on March 03, 2009, 08:11:09 AM
The tube coming out of the back of the water pump, well not out of the pump itself but it looks like the housing behind the water pump, is leaking coolant. How do I stop this? Do I have to replace the tube itself or is it a "O" ring or somthing? Any easy way to do this? Tips? Suggestions? Is it a fairly straight forward job or should I take it to a "Real" Mechanic? Oh yeah it's an '87 samurai.

Take pics of the leak. If it's just a cracked hose of some kind (I don't remember any hoses / tubes coming out of the pump  ??? ), it should be easy to replace. If it's the pump itself that's leaking, they're easy to replace too. You should be able to do it in a couple hours with hand tools. It helps to have a friend when tensioning the belts (during re-assembly). DO NOT over-tighten the belts. The Chilton manual will tell you how much deflection you should have (book will explain).

If you look at the engine while standing on the pass. side just above the alternator (and it seems to be behind the water pump) going straight back under the intake it looks like a metal tube. This is where it is leaking right where it meets the back of some housing that the water pump bolts to from the front side. I will get futher into it this weekend when I can. I just thought I would "Fish" here for answers before this weekend to help me go in the right direction. Thanks for the reply.

i know the tube you speak of. a very japanese thing, i think.
i have experienced this on other vehicles- there is an 'o' ring on the tube and it slips into the back of pump.
i don't recall my 1.3L having this, but will look next time i open the hood.

All suzuki G series blocks has this tube with the O-ring.

It's very easy to replace the O-ring.

Thanks! Now I need to ask if you can throw a few "Steps" in to help me get started if it is not too much trouble. I am really not pleased with the Haynes book I got but it is all I have to go by.....Does anyone have a "Exploded" view of this set up that they could post or somthing?  My next step is to buy a CD Shop Manual on this thing next pay day....or the next...or the next...you get what I mean.

You should give Acks Faq a try.  He has a lot of the manuals available on-line and links to various articles around the web.  You might be able to find the instructions you are looking for on there.

All the zuke engines (1.3/1.6 8v & 16v) have tube coming from the back of the water pump goes into intake and head via rubber lines.

I would get one from the dealer to ensure that it is the right thickness as well as diameter. There is only the one 10mm headed bolt keeping the tube in place but they can get seized up from corrosion/skanky water. I had to remove the water pump on mine and drift it out with a large socket.
