Title: Can't find shift boot
Post by: mmurr on March 03, 2009, 12:26:43 PM
I'm trying to get the shift lever boot for the transfer case on a '99 Tracker. The small round one that fastens to the transfer case, not the large rectangle one on the console. Chevy stealer told me it only came with the shift shaft and could be mine for $300! I said I would check the 'net. Has anyone had to buy one of these and where, how much?

Just grab one off a Sidekick. I am 99% sure they are the same.

I contacted a dealer and asked about the sidekick, same thing, they only sell the boot with the shaft. Am I the only one with a boot that's rotted and torn? Or do most of you just ignore it?

Try to pick a used one up from Hawk Suzuki or a junkyard:

Good luck!

I'm sure the OP has already resolved this, but it seems to pop up every once in a while, so here's another solution for the next guy who asks ...

Get a steering rack boot where the narrow side of the accordion pleat matches the shift lever housing neck and cut it to the length you need.

Lube the tie rod end with liquid soap, slip it over the shift lever and tie wrap it to the shift lever housing and you're good to go.
