Title: Quick ? on mustang shocks
Post by: Z71Edge on March 10, 2009, 05:18:55 AM
Mustang shocks collapsed are the same length as stock "TracKick" shocks right? and extended they are 2" longer? My rear shocks are blown on the tracker, and even though im not gonna run a lift on it now, I was wondering if I could still run these shocks (achieving a little more flex outa the extra 2")

mustang shocks are the same length as the crown vics shocks compressed, extended they are longer.  as for comparison to stock i believe they are longer when compressed..

Your lift & flex is determined by your springs. The shocks just need to match the range of the springs, or they'll act like bumpstops or limit straps (depending on if they don't compress or extend enough). If lifting a kick was as easy as a $15 shock, everyone would be doing it. I can't remember if it's the crown vic or the mustang shock that comes with the sleeve in the eyelet already, but get the one WITH the sleeve. It will save you time & frustration trying to harvest the one from your stock shock.

I'm not sure on the collapsed length, but the '95 mustang shocks fit in mine without modding the sleeve in the lower mount,  however I did slightly modify the mustang's upper mount bushing to fit the tracker frame.  I wouldn't recommend the shocks without the lift though as they may bottom out or top out(either damaging the shock or letting the spring fall out).

I know that shocks alone do not determine lift, i didn't ask that lol...however the shocks, if 2" longer (in theory) SHOULD allow the suspension to droop an additional 2" further than the stock shocks (which previously limited this). I also understand that the spring may droop out of the pocket, however I dont think they will completely fall out because with just 2" longer shocks, this shouldn't allow for the springs to fully drop out...if it did, then the springs would fall out even with the spacers because the spacers do not retain the spring at all.

The mustang shocks are the ones that have the correct sleeve, not the crown vics. Im just thinking for $15 a shock, if I can run mustangs instead of tracker replacements and have it acheive this extra 2" of flex travel, that would work out just fine...only problem would be is if the collapsed length is longer and not the same as a stock tracker...this would cause the shocks to top out when having the tires stuffed, driving over rr tracks, etc.

Anybody remember offhand, for sure, the collapsed length of mustang shocks and if they are the same or close to stock?  ???

Don't know off the top of my head. Local auto parts place should have it listed in the book.

even better than the book, go to your parts store and compare them in hand, all 3 shocks in this topic..that way you know what you've got.
