Yeah I'm lookin right at my keyboard and there's no search button, it's probably with the "any" key, I can't find that either!

LOL - great comments guys, keep those 'foolish' questions coming  ;D

Search nazzi sites suck, but so does answering the same question several times a month. With no FAQ on this site, good information is out there in discussions, but a lot of "details" are spread throughout several threads (where 90%+ of the information is the same), and a lot of "data mining" needs to be done to dig out the little nuggets of important info across hand-fulls of similar topics. Hopefully this "series" can help to distill the information a bit, and have one place we can point people towards per topic. Hoping for one of those win/win things.

I think its a good idea, kind of like a "FAQ: please read before posting" section.  Good thinkin.

I can understand why most people dont search.

Ive been a part of many forums and have even modded a few of them.

Some search features wont turn up diddly.

This place's search is actually pretty good for the most part.

It would be a great idea for people to use it.

What about possibly getting the forum set up a bit different. thumpertalk.com for 4-stroke dirtbikes has it set up so you can look at make and model specific threads. I have noticed on ear at times I am looking for things for my samurai and being very new to them it is hard at times to know if the tread will apply to my vehicle. I also think a FAQ permanent thread would be a very good idea with subjects like the original poster mentioned. Just my 2 cents. Either way I think this all will help the forum.

I tried for that two years ago

Separate forums for sami and trackicks

Didnt fly

FAQ stickies are good
But about 50% of new users actually read them

Don't really have an answer for you. I know gear oil is MUCH thicker than ATF. I'm guessing that's for good reason. I'm sure http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ (http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/) will have a better answer for you.

my buddy also said taking off my the sway bar will get me more travel in the front end is that true and will it be good for free way driving.

I don't believe you get more travel, but the suspension certainly cycles much easier. When I'm in more rock crawling style wheeling, I'll pop off the bolts at the control arms. It's 2 bolts (you can take the whole say bar off if you'd like, but it's 4 more bolts and you have to store the bar somewhere), and takes about 5 min to do. For high-speed wheeling, I like to leave it on (better stability). I also prefer to have it on during street driving - it makes a big difference. But I'm not running a stock suspension, so that might be why. Try taking the bar off and seeing how you like it. Just take it easy in turns 'till you get used to the feel (there will be more body roll).

This is great! I'm excited that some of the ol' timers would like to help out the new folks and are taking ownership in making that happen. What springs to mind is to create a Beginner sub-forum to this main Suzuki sub-forum and we can post each of those questions that Jeremiah came up with as threads to seed the discussions.

Would those of you that are interested in helping the newbies support that by looking at the new sub-forum (if created) and answering questions to the best of your ability?

Maybe a wiki would be a better way to go?

As a noob....I think a wiki page would be awesome.

And the sub forum for beginners sounds great as well.

I would definitely try to contribute to threads that fall under categories I actually am familiar with.  It won't be many....but....

i think a beginner sub forum would be great. I think something like that would answer a lot of my questions.

Is there a way to create a sticky thread called something like "FAQ" or "New to the forum? Read me before posting" at the top? Inside can be a welcome note, and an index of these "Dear Newbie" threads. Each "Dear Newbie" can be indexed, which is why I put the (1) up there. I think the advantage is this is a very high-traffic area, so it will be more likely the "sub threads" will be contributed to by both new and old members. I'm also familiar with how to add links, pics and edit in a normal thread. I suppose I could learn to use a wiki, but what's the advantage of a wiki over what we've already got?

Just separating the Trackick from sami would help too.

This is lookin like it will be a good thing for noobs like me ;)  One suggestion, if you end up making a sticky or seperate "welcome noob" section I'd make the heading red or something so it's more visible.  Just a thought. :D

Probably not going to happen. Too hard to sort out the existing threads.

What if we didn't do anything with the threads already made but in a sticky FAQ section split it into newbie trackick, and Newbie Sami

I would keep them more together than spreading them out.  It seems like other forums get dead spots in them when they separate sami's and trackicks.

I'm all game for a FAQ section, it would be nice so slow the high amount of re asked questions.  I would definitely be willing to help out and spread as much of my Suzuki knowledge as i can.  There's also a lot of well informed people here so i think this whole idea would be a good thing!

Edit.....realizzed i coulnt spel

I think we will move forward with adding a sub-forum for this forum (Suzuki) for FAQs. I want to mull it over a bit to try and give it a structure that will make it successful for newbies and us before it's created. Thanks for all the input on the subject.

Sounds like a good idea  8) ...but aside from that, I must ask why it bothers some of the members when new people post up questions that have obviously been asked before.  It's funny because they're always the first to jump in and give their piece of mind like they're watching for them(repete question Police). What will you do when the repete questions slow down?... widdle wood?

I happen to like the repete questions, it sparks up conversation and the new member gets a chance to warm up, meet some great people and talk about themselves and their rig.

Just my $.02

I think one of the big reasons is it clutters up the forum.  Then when it comes down to searching you have to do lots of sifting to find what you need.

It doesn't bother me at all to see the same questions, it takes 0 energy to answer the question.  This is pirate where everyone will flame you to death if you ask a so called "newb" question.

As a newb myself, it would be nice to have one place to go to read some basics, that every zuki owner should know. Then from what I learned on the FAQ I can ask questions with a little more knowledge. For example mt dad and I had a jeep cherokee, that I worked on a little bit, not much and I thought I actually knew a far amount about lifts and things. Turns out I know very little but am learning. Things like SPOA that people throw around on here as common term, took me awhile to figure out what it was. So it would be nice to have one place to learn basics, then be able to post better questions, and understand answers better.

The only time it bothers me is if the same question is posted on the first page. I've seen the same question up to four times on the first page of the tech area  :-\ Even then, I try to just answer the question - unless it's "complicated" in which case I'll just find a thread where the issue's been hashed out, a good how-to article, or ACK's FAQ.

ebewley,
If it's cool, I'll just post another "dear newb" in a few days, share what I know (with links to sources where I can), and then leave it up to other people to share their knowledge and ask questions. If you want to move things around - or if you'd like me to stop (so it doesn't conflict with your plans for an FAQ) just let me know... I'm easy  ;D

i agree. i think that could be a dear newbie all in it's own; the definitions of all the acronyms that are thrown around by the pros that take a ton of reading for someone new to this sort of thing to figure out.

example: spoa, soa, OME, SR, AA, DA,IFS, SAS, SPUA, PS, OTT, ETC. of course i know there are a million more, i just can't think of them, but you get the idea, kind of a dictionary.

Originally it meant someone that is new.  According to Wikipedia it was used in the military.

For on-line use it was a derogatory term you used on someone who was crappy/sucked/didn't know the basics.  Usually for video games.  Basically if someone screwed up or asked a stupid question, he was a 'fscking newb'.  I"m not a big fan of referring to people as newbies for that reason, cause I'm old school like that.  Unless they annoy me.  Fscking noobs...  :D

Now it has gone back to just being someone new.  But only in the full proper spelling of newbie.  n00bs still szck something hardcore.  :P

Perhaps using something more neutral, like...
FAQ (2): SPOA
Topic of the Week (2): SPOA

 ???

Moderators:
Will I be able to make an "index" thread (maybe stickied?) I can update as more topics are added? I think I remember there being a "time out" that makes it so posts can't be edited after a certain amount of time has passed?

I think people use RUF instead of RSUF as you can't really pronounce RSUF very well.  are-suf...
