Hi all,
I have an 89 Samurai JL with 35K miles. Bought it a year ago - pretty much was sitting in a garage since 1992. Started running rough, checked plugs and found coolant in #1 cyllinder, pulled head and had checked at the auto machine shop. No problem, flat, no cracks all the fire holes check out as well as the valves. Is this common? Anything else I should look at before I put it all back together?
Thanks for taking the time to read and any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

make sure you put the gasket on thr right way my brother put a gasket on wrong & it blocked the oil passage to the head & siezed the cam >:(

have you had the block looked at?
couldnt the coolant be getting by through the block and not just the head (cracks, warped, etc)
doesnt happen as much but if there was no signs of it getting by the head the only other way is the block...

I heard that it is not uncommon for the 1.3L to have the head gasket let go at 30 - 40K miles.
The block appears OK and no sign of piston / cylinder damage.

I am waiting on parts to fix my 88.5 sam head gasket. it had gone soft between the water jacket and cylinder bore on #4 cylinder.
I took the head to a trusted machine shop and it isn't warped or cracked, they think it was just a cheap auto parts store head gasket.
This time I'm getting a full engine set of genuine suzuki gaskets so hopefully this won't happen again.
Mine was due for some work though, it's at 350k miles, replacing all the top gaskets/seals, timing cover/pulleys/belt, new torque camshaft, fuel pump and rocker arm shafts.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem. Good luck getting it running again.

Well if it sat for that long it could have dried out and died prematurely.
