Helllo All,
I wanted to share a few photos of the new CALMINI solid axle Sidekick kit featuring their new custum Anvil axle. These pics are taken right as the 'Kick was coming out of the CALMINI shop. It still has 32x9.5 Swampers on it. Before the Zukimelt, I put on some 33x12.5 MT/R tires on it and they fit and worked fine with extremely minimal rub on uncut fenders and ramped a 863 on the Badlands 30 degree ramp. Of speical note is the SYE [Slip Yoke Eliminator] kit that allows the use of flanged drivelines and puts more utility into the Sidekick case.
Look for a complete and extensive write up next month.
Thanks, Eric

This is a kit they plan of selling? :o If so I am glad I didn't buy the super articulation kit! :D

Monday 21, 2003 9:26AM :P
This has me rethinking my whole set-up! What a time saver... I don't care how much they're asking just when can I get the rigging and will it be in Calmini's new catalog? I'll be giving them a buzz soon as they're awake as I'm on eastern standard time. Mean time I will be antsey maybe I'll have another cup fo joe. :P :P

This will be real close to what they will be offering. There are a few parts on this prototype setup that are welded on. Steve has told me that they're going to go for a complete bolt on kit. At any rate, the kit that will be for sale will be quite similar to what is shown here.

-
Sweet!
Will this kit work with 4 doors? Or only 2 doors :-/ ? I would love to think about seriously buying this if it would work for me!
Heather
-
Now that looks awesome.
-
Looks real sharp, how is the ride compared to the three inch? Looks real beefy, and the SYE is what is trully needed on these trucks, is the front axle Suzuki parts, looks like a rear diff up front (Spyder trax type housing).
It is really nice to see a vendor for Suzuki busting there buts to put these type of setups together.
Kudos to Calmini
Mac
-
It would be way to cool if they are looking at this for the Grand Vitara as well, that would completly alter that vehicles off road ability and lift limitations.
Mac
-
Well after seening this I just might stop trying to build my XL-7 up and get a 2 door. ::)
George
-
This will probably be a real step up in price from the 3" with everything needed to do this, but it looks like it will definitly worth the big bucks.
Eric :
what was the reason for the change over on the rear as well, as opposed to leaving what you had with the 3"
Mac
-
Hey Eric,
Thats a pretty cool suspension! 8) What kind of
steering knuckles are those,Danas? You going to have
that rig on the Rubicon this year for the Calmini run? ???

Heather
Yes, this is what I want to know also, I have a 4 door and if it is only for 2 doors then I gues I will have to buy one of the used kits that will appear in the months following the sas kit release.
-
I mean used superarticulation kits. I was wonder Mr.
Buely if you had any idea how much $ this baby would cost?
Thanks
-
Awesome ! I spoke with Steve today and I understand this is strictly a prototype set-up and your the testing vehicle, so do them proud and give us a shot with those 33's on the rig...44 C-knuckles to boot too.... Keep me updated and informed especially if your going to S.E.M.A.
my e-mail address is wdaniel20|removethispart|@comcast.net  ;)

Nice setup. Is it just me or does the rear passenger side coil look really bad????? After running the super articulation lift I would put a SAS in in a heart beat. Don't get me wrong I really like the kit but I can't stand the steering. If stuff would quit twisting I would be happy. Maybe I should build a better mouse trap.
Quess I will have to make due with what I have...........
Wonder how much this kit will cost????
-
Any news on when this might be released!!!!I was going to order my lift this week, but will hold off until further notice of this kit!!!! 8)
-
HOLY SH*T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want it!!!!!!!!
or if any of you than run the 3" calmini would to buy the straight axle kit, please sell my your 3" suspension kit!!!!
Thanx!
Fredo
-
Come to think of it should this set-up work well Suzuki USA should get in touch with Calmini. This could be something radical that the Sidekicks, Trackers, and Vitaras need! It would definitely boost the performance of the intended use of this truck. :)
-
Sweet, Eric. Got any pics of it in action from the Melt? ;)
-
LOOKS LIKE AN AWESOME SET UP ! I TO WAS THINKING OF ORDERING CALMINI'S 3+3 LIFT! BUT WOULD REALLY LIKE MORE INFO ON THIS....ALSO BEEN WAITING TO SEE IF ROCKY ROAD IS GONNA COME OUT WITH THAT 6" LIFT THEY'VE BEEN LISTING AS IN THE WORKS ??? ...CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR MORE ! I'LL KEEP READING & LISTENING...
-
I just want that SYE kit!!! I doubt that Calmini will make a version for a Sport model, but if the sell just the SYE kit it would make things a lot easier...hmmm :-/
-
Any reports on the new solid axle????? My buddy that owns the 4X4 shop called Calmini  Friday  and asked and is calling Monday to get more info!!!!!  I really want this ASAP!!!!!! My wheels and tires are sitting in the shop and I want to get the lift  on ASAP!!!
-
I have the biggest hard on right now!!!! lol
-
BTT... so... has anyone heard anything more about this kit working on 4 doors?
Heather
-
Nothing has been mentioned since this thread started. Eric knows more than anyone except for Calmini. Just gonna have to wait, but I can't see why it wouldn't work on the four door. It's supposed to be a bolt in, but I think that it will be a little more than just a straight bolt in. Can't wait to see this lift on customers rigs with pictures :)
I'm gonna stay IFS since I just did it less than a month ago. It's kinda funny because I heard a wiff of this kit before, but the day after I installed my 3" lift, Eric posts pictures of this new lift.
That's the story of my life :) lol
-
It's probably best :-/ It will probably take a while to go from prototype, through endurance testing and then through production and to the customer. I checked it out up close and it is a realy cool set up. And form the looks of it, it will be a complete bolt on Kit. It was amazing to see some of the ideas they came up with to achieve it :o

One of the fellows I know here has been bugging Steve at Calmini for info, and when he was on the phone last Steve told him that sometime in October they should be getting close with this system, but also told him it should come in aroung 6K I hope he meant Canadian.
Third hand info so take it as you will
Mac
-
6K?! I may have to rethink my plan on Toy axles then... I've seen old toy trucks for sale on the side of the road here for about 1K.
Heather
-
For $6000? What exactly is supposed to come in this kit? Has anyone been let known that information yet. I'm with Heather and the whole Yota axle swap. Rather fab my own and bloody some knuckles than to spend that much.
-
Well what he said was that in the end you would probably end up spending around 6k. The kit itself is most likely cheaper than that, but there’s some things to note.
- You will have to buy the d44 knuckles and 3rd mem for the front axel yourself.. the axel doesn’t come with them.
- You will need the SYE drive shafts.
Just remember though. The kit is still in its proto stage.. so who knows what the figures will be in the end.
Maybe it was just a number off the top of Steve’s head.
Maybe in the end the axel will come fully equipped.
Maybe he meant Canadian dollars (seeing how I’m from Canada, and mentioned it in the phone call.)
Maybe if you say "Maybe" enough you begin to realize that nothing about this kit is set in stone yet. I guess all we can do is sit and be patient because speculating only creates false assumptions, and as they say, "to assume only makes an ASS out of U & ME"
Happy Zookin!
-
$6000? Yeah that's a good bit of money especially considering the price of a Kick/Tracker that someone intending to modify the hell out is probably going to be about 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the SAS kit. Like Kreg said though that figure is factoring in a lot of other outside costs you'd incur and possibly was in Canadian Dollars.
Now don't get me wrong, I love the fact they're doing the kit. But for that kind of money I'll go buy a pair of D44's out of a Wagoneer or a Scout and make my own. Hell for 6k I could probably use Unimog axles and get even better clearance if I could get some better gear ratios for the diffs because of the geardowns in the hubs on the Mog axles.
Can't say I wouldn't keep their overall design for the linkage or something pretty similar, it looks pretty damn good in fact. I just think they're really going to have a hard sell with a price point like that since most people buying a Kick/Tracker aren't going to want to pay that much to seriously offroad it. Were it not for my height and the fact I physically have a hard time driving a Samurai, I'd have a very tough time shelling out 6k for a SAS kit over just buying a Sammy and going to town.
Very disappointing news this is (as Yoda would say).
Oh well at least if I build my own it won't be Calmini blue. Nothing against their signature color, but even if I did buy theirs it's getting beadblasted and recoated in red or black or a gray metallic hammertone or something, my Tracker's black with red trim and the Calmini blue added to that makes it look like a big bruise. Looks ok on alot of Trackers/Kicks but not black ones.
-
Personally I would pay the 6K in U.S.D. just because I have tried and died doing it the hard way, you know what I am talking about, first I tried Sammy gear and it stunk then I tried Toyota junk then after getting disgusted with it I tried to switch back to the way it was before with the IFS and I monkey fudged the frame in a major way...So I had bought another Sidekick frame and transfered the good stuff to the new frame after dismantling the bad one. Now I have something going. The newer frame had 86,000 miles on it and the title reads 86,000 but the odometer reads 1,220 now because it came from the other truck so in essence the only thing that has alot of miles on it is the frame nothing else.  I'm getting antsey and have even tried to tempt Eric Bewley to sell me his set-up. Granted my truck will never see dirt or mud, because it is still in it's growing stages.  (My wife is screaming are you nut's do "YOU KNOW HOW MUCH YOU HAVE  SPENT" doing this project!)
-
That's the problem with sinking tons
of money into a truck, now you don't
even want to think about taking it
wheeling, I was going to say I bet you
never wheel the Crabzuki, too bad, but
unless your going to show it, I think
it's a waste of money. Mods are fine
I have my share of em, and putting
cash into a truck is fine too but to
keep it in a glass case is too much
for me, if you can't have fun with it
what's the point ???

I'm just waiting for the full write up on the SAS, or did I miss it?

I'm just waiting for the full write up on the SAS, or did I miss it?
The full write up will be soon. I'm still testing the kit fully to give a complete report. This weekend we'll be on the Rubicon giving it a full work out. I can say that so far I'm extremely impressed. So much so, that I'm actually considering selling my red Samurai. Which if you know me, is a huge step!
Stay tuned... -Eric
-
If you do, let us know. I think I'm not the only one who'd be interested! ;D

Darn. Just saw your ad in the garage sale. Too far for me! :(
Well I'm sure it'll find a loving home. Good luck!

I just wanted to clear something up. I didnt want to say anything because I dont have any hard facts on pricing but one thing I do know is that it wont be anywhere near $6000. I remember hearing $1500 + front axle. Even estimating high on the cost of a scratch front housing ($2000) were still nowhere near $6000. This is an amount that even Calmini could not give as they havent even finished prototyping it yet. I would be suprised if we hear any hard info until this kit has had some hard miles on it to work out any bugs. I know I wouldnt release anything of this caliber without some extensive testing.
Mike
-
Ahh, ok, well the $1500 + Axle seems reasonable, $6000 just seemed a tad steep.
-
Any definite prices yet????????? I want to lift mine ASAP!!!Have the wheels and tires mounted .Just waiting to hear a price!!!
-
Ya, I was wondering whats happening with this kit too.
When I origanally spoke with Steve he said that they were hoping to get the kit released sometime in October.
But unless they are making an effort to keep info on the kit undercover, then I can't see an October release happening because I havent heard a word about it since this thead was started.
I do want them to take their time, because we all know faulty merchandise is a pain in the neck. But I would like to know how much its gonna cost, because my wait may be in vain if its way over my budget... in that case I will order the 3+3 indy lift.
Any new info?

After all is said and done I am under the conclusion that this set-up will come out in November and still it has me excited and ready to do some fabrication's to my frame, I feel as if this set-up doesn't come out then I will personally go and try to copy this set-up for myself. I feel like a giddy little school boy over a hot chick, when it comes to this set-up. :)

i would also like to know what is going on with this project it interest's me very much

Never once did we ever say the kit was never going to be built. The proto-type kit was just released two months ago and is still in testing. I do not know where you receive your information, but we have always been moving forward on this kit. Once the SAS enters into production it will be added to the website with an anticipated release date. Estimated cost on the kit is $1500.00. Please call the sales office if you have any questions regarding our parts and parts in the works. Thank you for your interest in the CALMINI Suzuki line. Awaiting your call.

Subject: Hello new calmini shoper
Hello i am new to the world of 4x4 but i have recently aquired a 91 tracker 2 door i was looking around forums and books and i came across a thread with the proposed calmini solid axel kit for the tracker/sidekick
but now to my dismay i have read that calmini has dropped the project for lack of interest i know that i would buy a calmini solid axel swap i know alot of other people would buy it to some of the people buy the early samuris because of the solid axels but if they had a choice between the shorter wheelbase of a samy to the longer more spacios tracker they would glady take the tracker and put a solid front axel underneath it
the only problem i can see is price but if the price is reasonable i think that u will be back ordered in a matter of weeks once news got out u dont even need to make it fully bolt on partial welding is very practicle for a solid axel swap
sorry for the bad spelling and lack of punctuation if u have any questions for me please please feel free to e-mail me back at mhn3773|removethispart|@hotmail.com
if i can not get the solid axel i will suffer with the 3 inch super articulation =) u make a very fine product keep it coming
-Mike
-
WHOOO YAAAA!!!! ;D all right Mike. I thought it would be more like 2,500 dollor too. it couldn't be cheap to build that custom front axle. I bet you will have to get your own gears and locker, and mabey even the center section. anyway i'm glad i posted the other thread on this, now we have got some of the info we needed. Thanks again Mike. lata Stu

I am sure Calmini's target price of $1500 does not include the front axle. The front axle looks like the work of Spidertrax. For $1500, I'll bet you just get the stuff in the pictures that is "Calmini Blue".
If the axle is about $1500, the whole conversion is going to cost a little over $3000.

I can guarantee you that the front axle pictured is a Calmini creation. Don't be fooled by the shape, that style of custom third member housing has been around for a long, long time.
-Eric
-
i think that 1500 is reasonable almost no matter whats missing this will make it so much more convinient even if u have to supply some of the parts for the puzzle urself
the biggest market ever is ease in convinence the pearson that makes it is the winner lol i am surised they emailed me back within a week even =)
-
Well, OK.  I don't have any idea if that really IS a Spidertrax axle.  I meant that it is made LIKE a Spidertrax axle; Suzuki third member, welded sheet housing, and D44 ends, with disk brakes.  And Spidertrax sells theirs for $1700.  Which isn't too outrageous, as Dynatrac gets around $5000 for one of theirs!
I don't know if Calmini is going to make their own axle (they certainly have the capability) or source one from another supplier.  Either way, judging by my assumed value of the axle in the $1500 range and looking at the quantity and amount of fabricated "blue stuff" (compared with the price of other Calmini stuff), it still seems to me that my total price guess of $3000 is not unreasonable.
We'll see.  I'd be delighted if the total cost came to half that!  Calmini will have a line out the door at that price!
-
Last I heard is it was planned to be EST cost of $1500 minus front axle. Front axle would be additional. This would be sold seperatly. Cost of the front axle was unknown however im sure that it wouldnt be a far cry from Spidertrax. I can assure you that the prototype is Calmini.
Mike
-
I think you will have to buy the SYE drive shafts separate too.
when I originally spoke with Steave he said that the axel wasn’t gonna include the d44 knuckles or the 3rd member. They were to be bought separately by the consumer.
This may have changed since I spoke with him (a few months ago) so who knows what the deal is. But I bet those SYE's will be worth a pretty penny, so I would shoot a little higher than 3k.
Happy Zookin!
-
I'll tell you what, if you buy a Kicker for $1500, add the SAS kit, add the axle, add for gears and lockers and tires....
Base Kick - $1500
SAS Kit - $1500
Soild Axle - $1500
4:1 Gears - $1000
HD-RearShafts - $250
Lockers - $400
Armour - $1000
SYE & CV shaft - $1000
Other Stuff - $850
Rough Total: ~$9000
Wow! Think of that, a complete, really awesome 4x4 completely built for under $10,000. While some might thing that is WAY out of thier budget, it's actually a great deal. I can guarantee you that doing the same to a Jeep Libturdy would cost much more.
If we compare this to other "toys", $8-10K is what you would expect to pay to a top end quad, especially with add-ons. The "Mule" ATV is around 10K, and I think the new Bomb 2-seater quad is about the same.
And they don't have heat, A/C or a rear seat for 2. ;D
-
HD-RearShafts   -  $250
What/Where are people doing/getting heavy duty rear axles for Sidekicks?

Whew ! ! ! For a while there I thought I was going to have to buy a plane ticket to Oregon, and try to buy Eric's rig just for his set-up or worse, let him wake up and find his truck sitting on cinderblocks ...he..he..hee! ;D

Thanks for the kind words... The video was produced by a company called Donkey Worx.

Thanks for the Nice pics and video, ya gotta had it to calmini! It takes some brass bunks to go ahead with such a radical solid axle kit, in this economy, for a truck that dosn't have the large following associated with a ford, toyota, chevy, or dodge.
-
;D To quote E. Bewley's article "Watch out! The Sidekicks are coming... " - Amen!

i cant wait to have my own video with me driving my tracker solid axle! hehe. why must they taunt us, is life so unfair that we just cant have it now?

This kit makes me want a sidekick....

In the land of DownUnder we like getting freaky with our zooks as well. I only know of 1 Vitara with Solid Axle conversion (toyota diffs) in Australia. There would be a select group of nuts in Aussie Land that would pay for this kit, and pay happily for it.....
Lets show the BIG TOYS how to do it Suzuki Style....

I hope Steve Kramer reads this: It's November how much longer? I have 5 G's burning a hole in the bank waiting for the release of the straight axle set-up. Or I may have to give someone that already has the set-up a blanket party or take them snipe hunting. ;D ;D ;D

So... any updates on this yet?
This thread was made like 6 months ago... and Calmini's updated their site... where's the SAS? ???
-
i doubt its out yet explosivo..will probably be sometime after the summer if not after the new years..just a guess but it they dont seem to move very quick at calimni (no offense to them thats probably the reason there things are made so well )
-
My gut feeling is that axle costs way to much to make it into production. Most of the guys I know bought Suzukis to keep the costs of wheeling down.
Brian

On the other hand, I thik that the Calmini solid axle kit will always have a looooooooooong waiting list ........
I hope it will be available soon ,or at least it would be good if Calmini could inform us about when they plan to release the kit.I guess we all make our plans for modifications and upgrades......

I talked to Steve (from Calmini) about this kit in Moab. Sounds like they are concerned that it will be too pricy for most Suzuki Owners. Can Calmini sell enough of these to make it worth their time? I told him I think that it is, and I think they do too or they wouldnt have invested so much time and money into it. However, this is not an easy setup to mass produce. I can see why they would want to be certain that it would sell in big numbers before investing a lot of time on it. I did get the feeling it was going to go into production but it sounds like it will be on the back burner for a little while so they can get cought up on the products they already offer that are on backorder. I think that makes sense.
Somewhere in a post someone said something about Calmini anouncing products long before they are avalible...
Isnt that pretty common? They play songs on the radio way before the cd is realeased. Create the demand so when the product is avalible it doesnt sit on the shelves! Its just smart buisness.
Mike
-
I agree. But my opinion is that its very good to have a tested product to install in your truck .(especially the SAS kit which requires major mods if someone tries to do it by himself with the trial-error procedure).I mean Calmini is well known for producing high quality and tested products. It might be expensive (I wish I knew its price aprox) but its saves you time ,possible damages caused by wrong estimates of do-it yourself mods, and of course you feel safer and more relaxed if you install a tested product, especially from Calmini.
Create demand??? If they can give me an estimate of the cost and I m satisfied with that where can I send cash in advance ? and if they dont release it finally,I ll buy something else from them.
-
But ,in the meantime,I m just currious......
Why they dont make stronger driveshafts-CV's ? Isnt it sure that they will sell lots of them ?
-
I dont know how to create demand in their eyes either. ??? I think that it would be wise of them to release a educated guess price and see if they can get a pre-sell list started. :-/ I would guess if enough people signed up for the pre sell that would create demand. ::)
Just to be perfectly clear on this... this is just a thought... mostly just talking out of my ass! ;D
Mike
-
But ,in the meantime,I m just currious......
Why they dont make stronger driveshafts-CV's ? Isnt it sure that they will sell lots of them ?
Yes and no. Problem is cost. How much is a bulletproof CV shaft worth? $300 each? :-/ Pure speculation, but I doubt that they could do it for less. Knowing Calmini, they wouldnt put anything out unless it was 4130 with stainless knuckles ect... which is why I love their stuff. Id pay that but, would anybody else. Were back to the cheap Suzuki owner discussion! A Heep owner would think that was a bargan. Im not kiddin! Thats why EVERYBODY sells Heep parts. The are willing to drop the $$$
Mike
-
if they can do that ,I believe it will be good for both them and us.They would have a good estimate of possible sales and it would speed up things a little. And if they want to eliminate "possible" sales and feel more sure ,they can always set a cash in advance ammount for a pre sell list.
As it concerns their possible thought that they delay the kit cause it might be expensive for suzuki owners and wont sell much......it's not simple kit.It transforms the vehicle completely.I m always jealous of a sammy with just simple mods in suspension whenever I see their front left wheel up there and their rear right down there......... :)
Can you imagine (sure you can) a sidekick that has that SAS kit ......perfect truck....
Anyway.....just some thoughts......
just some thoughts......
-
I just want to be able to run a locker up front! I know about going to the steel third member, but for the prices I've seen (only found one) i'd rather do a solid axle. I'm thinking dana 44's off a xj, running 3.5"-4" lift xj coils in rear and whatever lift yj front leafs would level me out. Hopefully soon!!!

I agree. As far as I m concerned I would definately give 300$ for bullet proof CV instead of having even the anxiety of breaking one in a trial race or on a mountain.....
Cause mods are done in order to make a truck better. If you know that something breaks or has big possibilities to break (with no necessarily much stress) you have to find something stronger.I mean, what's the meaning of changing all the time a part that breaks and keep on getting that same part on and on ?? Whats the point of giving a considerable ammount of money for suspension lifts, lockers, clutches, tires, labor hours, and time and dont want to give an additional ammount of money (much smaller comparing to the total ammount already invested)to get a better part and replace the weak one ??
For me a broken CV halfshaft means time lost to fix the damage, anxiety, bad temper, cost to buy another one,and cost to pay the mechanic most of the times. If a bulletproof CV shaft beaks lets say 1 in 30 times where a stock CV shaft breaks 1 in 6,then the cost factor isnt' important to consider paying for a stronger CV halfshaft?
I believe the same goes for other mods,be it solid axle,clutch,suspension,e.t.c

About the Calmini SAS kit, if there is a consideration for mass production (understandable) ,at least it would be good to know if whoever is interested can order the kit just for himself.Like a custom order.I cant see a problem with that....
just a thought...

I have this saved as one of my Favorites ;D
Hoping it would come out in my life time, Now I have to make my own.

Now if they will make a 4-link & Coils Kit that can stuff yota's under an XL-7. Then i'm game, even at the Calmini price.

I dont know how to create demand in their eyes either.  ??? Mike
Hopefully the Nov issue of 4wd&OR Ultimate Adventure will help. I think in the next 5 years or less the Kick will be the popular Budget Wheeler the Sammy was of the last 10 years. THe trend in earnest has already begun.
EFI, Power steering, SHort wheel base, conv, Auto or Manual, and 10x more #s of vehicles produced then the Sammy. I've bought 2 more Kicks in the last week.
