Title: '87 samurai distributor oil leak
Post by: one mile on March 24, 2009, 06:09:44 AM
While replacing all the water hoses, I saw where oil is leaking at the back of the head. It seems to be around the distributor.......is this an easy fix or should I take it to a shop to have fixed?

or, soak your o-rings in PB Blast overnight. They'll re-swell and seal fine. Mine's been like this for 2 years - no problems.

Sounds good to me...Is this a common problem?

That, and the shifter sheet (it's kinda like an o-ring, but instead of sealing, it's holds your shifter in the right place) are the big thigns that go out. After 10+ years and many miles they just need servicing. If you ever plan on going into 4WD in your samurai, buy the $15 t-case shifter sheet. Takes about 30 min to swap out and will keep you from getting stuck in a gear range or neutral. While you're out and about.

Just replaced my o-ring today. If you have a shop nearby that specializes in hydraulic repair, such as cylinders and pumps, they probably stock or can order the o-ring. I happen to work at one myself. The o-ring you need is 56mm inside diameter by 2.5 mm thick.

I cleaned up around the dist. getting ready to work on the "O" ring and it looks like it is leaking from the housing HOLDING the dist. between the head and the housing...should I still change to "O" ring or look into pulling the housing holding the dist.?....Hope it is not too stupid of a question.

There's two o-rings that need replacing. Sounds like the lower one (on the shaft) is blown out. I just did the PB blast trick on both and was done with it. No worries about trying to source a metric 0-ring. DO NOT try and use SAE o-ring, it won't work.

Or call Hawk. The kit is cheap and will solve your problems.

I already have OEM parts on the way..Does anyone have a Exploded View of the Distributor holder that bolts to the back of the head? The manual I have doesn't go into any detail as how to remove it or if anything will FLY OFF or FALL OFF when I take it off. Don't want any suprises at my expense.

The only moving part is the gear on the end of the dist. Remove the dist. cap leaving the wires intact.  Mark where the rotor button is pointing as well as where the hold down bolt is in the slot. Remove the bolt (12mm). You can then remove the dist, the rotor button will rotate slightly. Then remove the three 10mm bolts that hold the dist housing on. The bottom one will be hard to see, but it is there(hopefully!). The cam gear sicks out of the head, but there is nothing that is gonna fall out, so go for it!

Hope this helps!
David
