Title: The biggest tire you can fit on a Samurai with a S/R 3.5 lift???
Post by: MiniFJ on March 26, 2009, 02:09:38 PM
What size tires are you guys running with this size lift?

Right now I'm running 29x8.5 swampers on some plain steel mods. I'm needing/wanting a larger tires because it's a little to over geared right now. I prefer a swampers and I don't mind trimming to make them fit but how big is too big on that lift?

I was thinking of 31x9.5 or 31x11.5 on 15x8 alum rims. Any help would be great!!!!!

If stock is 27", and you're adding 3.5" to that.... I'd think you'd be fine. Since the lift only needs to be 1/2 the increase in tire height (radius from the axle to outside of tire is 1/2 the tire height increase).

My icon is my samurai at Powerfest, it's small but I'll get a better picture out to you tonight. I love the 29's but with the gears, the high rpms down the freeway are a little much for my liking.

I was thinking 31's would fit with some timming but will a 31x11.5 rub on the inside wheel wells and leaf spring lock to lock?

What? too much gearing? Try 30's with 6-1's.

I just didn't know or remember you were rocking a 6:1 t case!! Compared to your rig my 3600rpm at 60 is nothing!! hahahaha.

That type of rpm/mph is almost stock. You're not driving a big V8 or a diesel, right? These are small ring-a-ding-ding engines. They'll do 4,000 - 4,500 all day long no problem. My green Samurai with the 30" tires runs 4,000 at 60 and my ol' red one runs 4,300 at 60. Both of them have logged several thousands of miles at those types of rpm.

You may be OK where you're at! :)

I guess a small ring-a-ding-ding engine can handle 3600rpm and up but I would like to do 65-70 at 3600 rpm. I think I have the enough power to step up the tire size and knock off a few rpms on freeway.

Sooooo do you think 31x11.5's would fit on my samurai with 3.5 of lift?

Are you still running spring under axle, I have a 5" Calmini S/R, I recently ditched the S/R in favor or standard 2" shackle's and I rub 30X11.50 TSL/SX's even with some trimming to the rear of the fenders.

So it's the width that is the killer. Does the tire hit the leaf spring lock to lock at all and how much did you need to cut out of the front by the bumper/support to run 11.5's?

Yeah it's really not that bad, just a little loud. I have a custom/stock front bumper that mounts off the frame. The stock tube mounts are cut off.

That does not sound that bad. I can handled some cutting and a little rubbing!!

Now does anyone have some good used 31 inch swampers for sale!! hahahahaha

I have an ARB front bumper and original bumper mounts/tubes are long gone, most of my trimming of the fender was the "lip" under the fender flair. I did rub in the same place with 30X9.50's on 15X7 wheels.

freeriders98 here are some pictures of my samurai sitting on 29's. The pictures are still small but I think you'll get the point.

Thats good info to know NorCal. Thanks.

Looks like either way the bumper tubes will need some cutting and there will be some rubbing going on.

I got the same 3.5" Calmini S\R lift system and my 30" 9.5 BFG ATs rub that stupid "lip" on the back of the front fender when front wheel goes up it declines backwards a bit and wheel touches that "lip", just the same rubbing problem that norcalwreckchaser had posted about. You can read about S\R here http://www.off-road.com/trucks4x4/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=277628.

And I also want to go for 31" 11.5 LTBs and am wonderring if there'll be rubbing issues with springs when turn lock to lock.

Got 4.89 GRS2 t-case, when doing 100 km/h got about 3650-3700 rpms and this is on my 30" tall tires. 100 km/h = 62.2 mph

I've heared that I could use my stock rims but installed in side out, but I gues it's not that simple as might seemed to be.

Anyone can tell me with what offset should be rims so that 31" 11.5 LTBs won't rub springs? Maybe smthing like this http://www.tirepackage.com/Wheels/Rock-Crawler-Series-97-Black-Monster-Mod-Wheel.aspx?t_c=11&t_s=209&t_pt=100021&t_pl=3369&t_pn=PCW97-5785
but there's nothing about offset on steel wheels, offset indicated only on alloys.

Looks like we are in the same boat on the gearing and freeway rpms!! Thats good information on the offroad.com website, it helps confirm that it's possible to run 31's on a s/r 3.5 just need to do some trimming.

Thats a very good question on the offset of the rims to run a 11.5 wide tire so it doesn't rubbing the spring. Anyone out there have a good answer it clear this up?

I am running 1" wheel spacers all around, my wheels have 4" backspacing, no rubbing on the spring.

But what tires are you running?  And those 1" wheel spacer + 4" offset, how about wheel bearings stress?
