I took the third member off of my '87 samurai and found this sitting in the bottom of the diff housing, and I don't know where it came from.

Rear axle? Looks like the inner part of the stock axleshaft oil seals.

That is what they call a "seal protector", I believe. It sits in the axle tube and is supposed to keep the axle shaft from damaging the inner part of the axle seal, when the axle shafts are installed or removed.

O.k thanks, i see it came from the right side axle seal.

It is not part of the axle seal, it is a separate piece.
