Title: Anyone interested in upgraded CV's?
Post by: nova on April 02, 2009, 06:28:18 PM
Thanks to Mike H. for the How-To on Ford/Suzuki hybrid CV's, I'm planning on making a couple for those who want them.

I keep breaking CV's, and I can only imagine breaking a lot more with my welded front end, but I like my IFS and I would love to run big tires without worrying about the CV's.

I've been researching upgrades and it looks like the Ford Exploder/RangerCV's are the way to go.

I'll keep you guys updated and if all goes well, I may be making a whole bunch of them.

The Ford CV's are $60 each at the junkyard, but I only got enough TracKick Stubs to make 2 or 3 sets.

If you guys didn't know, I am "Bass Man" on a couple different forums.

Made the drivers side today and learned some things for future production.

I don't think hagen put a seal back on the hub side, so I gotta figue out how to keep more of the Sidekick shaft for a seal, cuz I cross rivers and mud puddles and I need to keep as much of the water out as possible.

They barely fit in the hub, but I kept my weld down just enough to clear by mistake. lol

I need to replace the outter-most bolts with studs or grind my bolt heads contoured to the boot, cuz it rubs the boot at full turn.

I'm gonna have to charge around $125 per axle on here, but I'm gonna need to charge $150 later to keep it going.  I bought 2 CV's locally for $25 a peice!  That other JY was a rip-off.

If you can supply the Ford CV ends, 2 TracKick outter ends, TracKick passenger-side inner, and the drivers side inner shaft (22 spline prefered, cuz cutting a good 26 is a sin), I would probably only charge $60 per axle shipped back.  Once I make enough of them, I'm probably gonna need you guys to supply everything or prepare to spend $75 for just 1 Ford shaft.

Let me make 2 more sets before anyone offers money.  I don't want anyone getting anything less than exceptional or be waiting for a couple extra weeks without the money or axles to show for it.  I'll show you guys my welds as soon as my dad uploads the pics.

It took me about 4 hours to make 1 axle today, but that's because I've never been in the guys shop before and I spent a good hour screwing around.  The guy has a lathe and mill, but they were at his house and we were 30 minutes away in his fab. shop.

BTW, Mike.  How did you put a seal on the hub side of these axles?

Sounds like a cool little project.  Good luck with it.

I don't have the kind of money for the kind of rig that needs this kid of kit.  =)

I'd love to see some pictures of this.  I'm not familiar with this mod on the axles.

I'm guessing Mike used rear axle hub studs for this?

Well, I beat the crap outta it today!  Broke the passenger side CV and gave the upgraded cv all the hell I could give it, and it still asked for more!!

The boot rubs on the coil too...  I don't think it's gonna wear a hole in it anytime soon, but I can easily get rid of every problem by widening it.

Are you going to do the Hagen Widening?  Possible total front end kit?

that's a great idea.

I would love to do the Hagen widen, but I gotta test with my rig and I'm trying to keep it a simple OEM replacement part.

Well...  I broke it today and it wasn't even in a hard place!  I was trying to climb up something with my wheel turned all the way and it went POP just like every other CV...

Here's the deal...  I'm not gonna sell any to Brent because there are too many issues with the regular customer.  You pretty much need to have the Hagen mod with the stubby axle, and I might not be able to get a seal to work with the outer CV, but if you want a couple axles to throw in the front of your Hagen Modded, welded front-end Sidekick, send me a PM and I will try to figure it out...

From what I can tell, these are only about twice as strong, but you will still break them.

I want a day of wheeling without breaking on 31's, so I'm gonna put a Samurai front axle in with my Double Toughs and be done with it.

If you have to have the Hagen widening then why not just go with the Toy shaft conversion?

do you have more info on the toy mod rhino?  I know stan sells it, but does he have a writeup anywhere?

there is no write up to my knowledge. It's essentially adapter plates, bushing and hub spacers to run toyota cvs. You will need to fab up a stub shaft for the passenger side.. I know several people running it and no problems as far as I know. Stan is 37kicker in this forum.

All the RPM rigs are using Stans toyota conversion. It sounds like he might be able to get some normal hours at his full time job soon. Maybe he will get some more time in the shop. If your really interested PM him and find out what kind of timeline he is on.

Will do.  Thanks Mike.  Just got done doing your widening mod and I love it.
