ok... i know i will get flamed for not searching through the pages apon pages for something that relates but the most i see pertains to the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT being ON mine is not, no light EVER i know it works cause it lights up when i start the truck up.
but since i got the truck 2 years ago it got around 450-500km a tank, im now getting 300. no dented tank, no wet spots that i can see.
but it does have a fuel smell when ive downshifted towards a light and such. dont know if its just a fuel line thats leaking or something... what should i check...
truck also idles at 1500 rpm. never really goes lower. i know thats not right, but ive just kept driving it like that for a while... it gets alot of cold driving (its alberta, its always cold...) so i never really noticed it as it was cold and i knew it would idle higher, buts its now 20 degrees out and its still staying high...

How long has it been since you changed out the air filter and fuel filter? A lot of people forget about the fuel filter. I change mine every 6000 - 9000 miles.

Need more specific info: total miles on engine, last full tune up, different driveline set up, etc etc. Could be any number of things. I'd start with a thorough examination of all the obvious stuff, like sklope says, check ALL filters, vacum lines for leaks, ignition system for efficency, etc. Do a complete inventory of your running gear, CHECK YOUR TIRE PRESSURES, etc. Then give us some more info.

Not to doubt your personal maintenance schedule, but my Chilton's says on a fuel injected engine to replace the fuel filter every 30,000 miles or 30 months, whichever comes first. Just throwin it out there :)

315,000 on truck (unknown if the engine was ever replaced) has front crank/cam seal leak, maybe distributor leak too (to damn dirty under the hood from 4x4in and the front oil leak)
airfilter changed 10,000 km ago
fuel filter is sitting in my toolbox... havent done it since 288,000 (when i bought it)
havent done any checking of vac lines or ignition
just had synthetic 75w90 thrown into the trans, transfercase, and dyno 80w90 in the diffs. less then 10,000 ago
235/75r15's on it, unknown psi (shop did them, runs nice down the road...) but it had better gas mileage with these tires before (so i dont think the tires are the problem)

thats as a maximum, alot of guys change it out earlier because if poor gas quality or just it being an older vehicle (tank starting to rust and such)

only exhaust leaks are manifold (downpipe to manifold mount) replaced 2 studs when i had it leak before, when i was installing it broke off the remaining original stud off. so its on with 2 bolts. it leaks a bit.
and the backside of the muffler, some exhaust gets past the muffler clamp. going to be welding it soon as i get some time and my works lot drys out (only place i can work and its a mud pit from the snow melting)
the fuel smell is just when downshifting or when i stop at a light i notice it when i first stop, then it goes away...
mileage over the last tank was 380km and with some 4x4ing at the local OHV park (slow speed crawling and some hillclimbs, first time out this year, so just putting around) and a good 100kmh to 140kmh the rest of the tank.
so the mileage is odd... it goes up and down... but i usually get 300-350 per tank. i got 380 cause i pushed it till it sputtered on corners (new guage cluster and figuring out how low E REALLY was... i know its not good for the pump but its worth me knowing where it is...)

I don't mess with the tbi stuff too much but maybe your fuel pressure regulator is leaking, if you have one with a vacuum hose on it pull it off and smell it for fuel, if it drips fuel it is shot for sure.

You likely answered your own question here: any leak in exhaust that can allow air in will cause the o2 sensor to read hi oxygen... & the ECU will add fuel because it thinks its running lean. This may also be where you're smelling gas from, in deaccel the backpressure is pushing the partly burnt fuel out of the leak. Fix this 1st & go from there.
