I have a 1995 suzuki escudo, 1600cc SOHC inj 16v (G16A) with a 5speed manual, done 137,000kms. Just done a spark plug clean, and lead check, replaced eng oil and filter, as well as fuel filter. Im running 30"muds on a lift kit. My problem is when I shift down to engine break and come to a halt, my revs drop right down to around 200-300 rpm. THey tend to sit there for about 3seconds then stabilize back to about 800, but sometimes it will continue to sit low, and almost stall on me. It seems to be worse once she is warm. I havent looked at dizzy rotor or points, but I feel it may be more of a fuel problem?
THats all I can think of at this point....Can anyone help me!!
Im in New Zealand, so Im guessing the sidekick is the American version of my escudo?

Is the Check Engine Light On? You may have a problem with the idle switch which tells the ECU that the engine should be at idle.

X2 on that CEL. Just a stab in the dark, but maybe your EGR valve is hanging open. EGR valve opens on deaccel, maybe it's not closing once you stop & causing the stumble. Could be staying open sometimes (when it stays low idle) & closing other times (when it returns to normal).

or your vss on the back of your speedometer.

yeah I have a light on, the engine hot light. Is that the check engine light?
Where can I find the EGR valve to check it, and how would I go about finding out if it is stuffed?
your help is greatly appreciated!!

and what is a VSS? how can I check that. THanks

If your "Engine Hot" lite is on and the engine is definitely not hot then you may have a problem with your coolant temp sensor. The ECU relies heavily on that to control several fuel parameters, so if its not reading right it could be causing your issues.
Also, I think there are actually 2 temp sensors. (ate least there are on my 93 tracker) One feeds the ECU, the other feeds the temp gauge.

The VSS (Vehicle speed sensor) is supposed to keep your engine from stumbling when coming up to a light, run a code on the ecm it will tell you if it is having problems or not.

Check out jtgh's site, great 'stufftoread':

awesome, how do I run a code on the ECM? (pretty fresh at this stuff as you can guess!)
thanks

The Suzuki's here 1995 and newer have a plug on the dash just under the steering wheel where your knee would hit it, I borrow a reader that plugs into that from auto zone or from schucks auto for free, not sure who you have there for auto parts but one of them may loan one to you.

Ok so its been a while since you guys gave me the ideas, and I am sorry I havent tried them earlier.
There is an EGR test you can do at idle, by depressign the diaphram on the EGR, the engine is meant to stall or almost stall. I tried this on mine and there was absolutely no change. So.... I pulled the lines off the EGR and checked the orifices to see if anything was blocked-and nothing was. So I went a little further and pulled the whole EGR out and gave that a good clean out and check. There was very little carbon build up within the EGR, but I did a little light reading and evidently the intake and outlet line to the EGR are sometimes gunged up pretty bad, and can cause the same trouble I have been having. So I got a coat hanger and a botttle or CRC and went to work on what I thought would be the cause of the problem.
Sadly after I had done my best, there was still very little gunge coming out, and the lines looked pretty good anyway. So I buttoned it back up and plugged all the lines back it. I tried the diaphram idle test again, and came up with the same result-absolutely no result in idle. If anything, there may have actually been a tiny increase in RPM!!!
So from what the www.kick-fix.com site says, the EGR idle test is meant to cause stall, and if it doesnt then the root cause should be the blocked lines.
Now that I have tried that, and it hasnt worked, I am a little stumped as to what my next step is.
Should I completely replace the EGR? Is there a way of checking the EGR diaphram integrity?
I thought I had the solution in the bag!!
Please help!!
