Anyone here wire up the electric connector for a trailer & a tracker? Is there a plug hiding somewhere out back, or do I need to tap into the existing wiring harness for break / turn signal/ running lights?

Should be a plug behind the driver's side tail light housing (at least on my 95 Tracker).

If you dont have one (like my 89), behind the tail light is a good place to tap into the harness for a wireing kit.

Okay, I'm going to be doing this this weekend, even though I don't have a trailer yet.
Ranger, I have a 95 2-door, so same deal? I can just plug in, with no special slicing? Or doesn't that depend on the HARNESS I get?
I figured I would buy a cheap trailer light set so I can test whatever I'm doing, but I don't know what the HELL I'm doing.

the plug is kinda back in there a ways, it is white square looking thing. LOL

Do I access it by removing the lens, or getting underneath and feeling around?
I got underneath this afternoon for a second--couldn't really look and get dirty because I was working--but I didn't see anything from that vantage point.

remove drivers taillight, reach in and above the wheel well its taped back on the main harness. remove the plug, wire in a converter (atleast i had to for my kick, as it has seperate turn signals) then route 4 flat connector out side of taillight opening and into trunk (can be seen sightly while looking at door gap when door is closed) but allows the wire to be easily acessed you could drill the interior panel for it to run through, or fish it down to where the hitch its and mount it down there
i for one run mine out the taillight, into the trunk, and when i tow it gets hooked up, slack gets put back into trunk and door is shut, keeping it from dragging on the ground.
if you want to test it you can buy a sinple plug in tester from most places that sell hitches. if not, run by somewhere that has a trailer and plug it in.
if you have any more questions about it, pm me, i install converters, hitches, brake controllers everyday for my job. if you want ill grab the wire colour codes tomorrow from work.

Nope.
The Suzuki/Tracker turn signal wiring requires a 5-wire to 4-wire converter in order to connect to the typical 4-wire trailer wiring system.
While there MAY be a kit that has a pre-wired adapter connector for the TracKick harness, most folks choose to splice in rather than spend lots of time searching for the adapter kit with the prewired plug.

there is no aftermarket plug in adapter for the stock wiring. it was a dealer only accessory and no aftermarket company made one since.
thats what i first looked for when i went to wire mine up.
its pretty easy to go out and get the converter, and a simple test light, strip the wires back and start probing the wires for which is which. most converter kits come with full instructions and some even come with a cheap test light.
trailer plug------truck
brown-----------running lights
green------------right turn signal/brake
yellow-----------left turn signal/brake
white------------ground
the green and yellow wires are what have to be converted the trackers and kicks use a 5 wire setup for the lights, they have seperate lights for the brake lights and turn signals, trailers have them combined.

This is what I used on my '96 2 dr.

You can find them at TSC, farm and fleet and some auto parts stores.
You can use the "fold over" wire taps to hook it up. Best place to tap in is behind the driver's side tail light. Taking off the inside plastic panel makes it easier. You can get a test light that connects to ground and pokes a pinhole through the insulation to identify which wire is which.
I set mine up so just the converter box sticks out from the plastic side panel, and I use a removable 4 foot extension between the box connector and the trailer connector.

no need to wire tap it or jumper off any wires, as theres a plug in for a suzuki made wiring adapter (no longer made)
just remove the plug, strip the wires
running lights-red wire yellow stripe
left turn-green wire red stripe
right turn-green wire yellow stripe
brake lights-green wire white stripe
ground is body (theres the taillight grounding point just behind the taillight on the left. either jumper the ground wire or remove screw and use a ring terminal)
converter has all the wires labeled to what they go to.
trailer plug wiring
brown-----------running lights
green------------right turn signal/brake
yellow-----------left turn signal/brake
white------------ground

I used the post above for wire colors. It was right and the lights worked right the first time.

Reving an old thread, I know, but.... I actually have the factory harness adapter for the tow package. My Tracker is a '90 model, and the adapter was buried in the drivers' quarter panel. My question is this: does any body know what the factory color codes are for the tralier plug, as the PO cut the freeking plug off!!! I have 2 wires unaccounted for. A heavy gauge Blue, and a heavy gauge White. The other wires are brown, NO trace, Yellow, with BLACK trace, and Green, with White trace.

Not sure about the Track/Kicks, but on US truck wiring white is ground
and blue is power, the other wires would be some combination of stop
left and right turns, get out your volt meter, or go get a $5 cheep one
and give it a go, should be easy enough to figure out

Hey Wildgoody. Thanks for the reply. That makes sense for the wires except for the blue one. You say that it would most likely be for power, but power for what? I was out in the garage this morning comparing the Tracker relay pack that I am wondering about to one of my "flat four" harnesses, and it makes sense now, except for the blue wire. I could most likely just "dead head" it, and leave it alone, I guess....

Ya, I'm not sure why there would be a power wire there either, but
it could be used for charging a battery like in a small camper trailer or
any other need, just check and see if it's powered, it might be to power
the lights and the other small wires ground them to turn the bulb on

the converter for the taillights needs to be powered. (i tested mine a while back and everything works till you turn on the taillights and hit the brakes, it cancels out the turn signal. theres 2 types of converters, powered and non powered. blue wire im suspecting is acc power. if i have time over the next week ill try and rip back into mine and start probing, im still running a non powered converter on mine, i just learn to not stay on the brakes when i want to make a lane change... ;)

You are right on Mike, the blue is the acc power on the trailer side of the plug. Probably won't need it with the teeny tiny trailer that our trackers 96 ponies and little brakes can handle.

i had a 4x8 on the back of my kick over the last weekend and it made my tails start flashing. (taillights on truck and trailer flash like i turned the hazards on) front lights dont, dash lights dont.
also had a uhaul car hauler on the back to pull out to pick up a family members dead car (unloaded weight was 2000lbs) dont worry, it was only towing the unloaded trailer, once it got there the larger truck took over. both trailers did the same with my truck.
i got a lot of weird looks with both trailers, no one knows how well these little buggers can tow. i was passing people on the highway with that car hauler. :laugh:

So, the BLUE wire could be used for , say, an Elec. brake on the trailer then? Thanks for the help with the rest of the wires, gang!

Could, but traditionally blue goes to something like a batt charger that would have power coming from the tow rig all the time instead of just when you hit the brakes, that way when you unhook the travel trailer the batts that run the lights inside and such have fully charged batts. If you do a google search on trailer wiring diagram it will clear it up for you. Your tracker will most likely not tow something heavy enough that it will need brakes, so if you wire up just the basic lights set up you'll probably have what you need. Our trackers are so light that they do not have the oats, stopping power, or sheer mass to make great tow rigs for much over a 1000lbs unless you live in the flats and don't experience wind and the like. Here is a basic light wiring diagram that should work between yours and any buddies rigs if everyone wires things as standard.

Oh, and I know that the little 'zuki ain't stout enough to warrant a trailer with Ebrakes, it was just a random thought.... Aux. power, huh.......hmmm......... >:D
