Title: Removing the Pan
Post by: jor on April 28, 2009, 03:21:20 PM
87 Tintop, stock engine
I
'm trying to get my pan off which looks to be attached with RTV. Anyone have a tip on how to break that damn RTV seal. I'm trying to slip a putty knife in there but so far, no go. Thanks.

I have used a rubber hammer, lightly tapping around the pan. Or from the top of the engine use a wide flat screwdriver and tap the lip of the pan downward. Good luck

When you get the pan off, use a wire brush to clean off that old goo! Also works well on the block itself.

jor, You need to remember that a slow constant pressure will help it release. I agree with all the above suggestions but it is one of those things you have to "Feel" your way through. It sounds like you understand not to force it or rush it. I myself am going to have to do just what you are doing in the near future.  GOOD LUCK!

Thanks to all. I got it off. Tried with a putty knife for awhile along with a rubber mallet. I finally touched the front lip with a long 2X4 and gave it a restrained whack and off it came!.
