Title: Looking for pics of aftermarket tire sizes with stock height.
Post by: djaychris on May 12, 2009, 10:50:34 AM
I'm trying to decide whether to lift my 03 Tracker or not, and wondering what it would look like at stock height with different tire sizes.  I was looking for pictures of stock trackers/vitara's with aftermarket tires/wheels.  Let me know what size your running with the picture.

-Thanks

front stock height with 225/75/16, slight rub on plastic but fixed by bending one metal tab with my fingers to a 45% angle.

rear 40mm lift with no touching.

235/75/15 no lift, runningboards removed.

Front, same tires, No lift / Jeff's lift 1.5" front 2" rear

My daughter wanted the running boards back

Before the lift it would rub in the rear just a bit loaded down and towing my 16' ski boat or the snowmobiles. It still rubs in the front if I turn it too far, but I never need to turn that sharp anyway, so it doesn't bother me at all.

just be sure that all you want is those tires... cause after you lift it and make room for bigger ones you might realize you wasted your money on small tires...  think about what you want and do it once!  might take longer to get done but will save in the long run..  enjoy.

Thanks for the pics, they are incredibly helpful.  I'm really torn about tire size.  I think I'm definately going with the 1.5/2" coil spacer lift.  Perhaps I'll lift it first then decide on my tire size.  I secretly want to go to 31" tires but I'm afraid that will rob my 4cyl (127 hp) automatic tranny 03 Tracker of all gas mileage/power?

Hey,  just for the heads up,  I'm running 30x9.5 m/ts on stock gears with the dinky little 1.6.  I did notice the drop in acceleration and mpg but not too bad.  The biggest problem I have is keeping the trans from trying to downshift out of overdrive on the freeway.  I'm thinking your larger engine might make up for the difference better.  I say lift it, you'll end up wanting to later anyway. ::)

yes lift it but keep in mind you might want to make it higher again down the track.
i have a 4 inch lift and im now thinking i need more  ::)

That's funny,  I just got my lift and 30s and I already want bigger tires. I'm gonna have to go yota axles, with 33s i think.  Then those won't be enough!  ;D

i ran 31x9.5 swampers for a couple years, they were lighter being thinner and worked very very well, when i switched to the ssr's which are 10lbs heavier per tire i noticed the extra weight..  maybe consider a narrower tire to save a bit of mileage.  then of course you could regear if that hasn't been mentioned... i never have yet because i'm still under manufacturers warranty until the end of this season..

Agreed.  If you haven't bought your tires yet, then don't go rushing out to purchase the 235/75/15s.  Give it some more thought.  If you are running an auto tranny with the V6 you should be able to pull the 30/9.50/15 tires easily and with minimal rub.  Unless you are made of money, and some people may be, it's damned hard to justify buying a new set of "taller" tires if you just put 5000Ks/miles on the set that you just bought last month.  Avoid the "buyers regret".

Think hard about what the end state for the appearance, function (whatever) you want for your truck  before you jump.  IF you intend to put coil spacers or longer springs under your truck, then wait for the tires until you have the suspension lift completed.  THEN make your decision on your tires.  235/75/15s will fit without a lift, but you might have a little more difficulty fitting 30's under your truck without the lift.

I have a little bit of buyers remorse.... but I'm not buying any new treads until the ones I am rolling on now  are smoked OR unless I find a decent set someone has up for trade.  Personally, if I "had it all to do over again" I'd be riding on 30/9.50/15s now instead of 29" tires just for the slight additional clearance the tire height would add to my frame and body for plowing through snow and clearing the ground on trails.

The more snow you can roll over... the less snow you end up pushing.  The rear diff pretty much slides through the snow, but the frame and body just plows it and paclks it into the frame until you can't push anymore and then you eventually bottom out on what you tried to drive over/thru.  I hate that!!!

Thanks for the reply.  You make some good points.  I have the 127hp 4cyl coupled to an auto in my tracker, and I don't want to rob it of power.  I'm thinking I'll stick with the factory wheels/tires for now, add the coil spacer lift, and go from there.  I'm still somewhat undecided.  I also really want to have cragar soft 8 wheels, but I can't seem to figure out if they'll fit my factory tracker brake hardware or not.

With the auto you have the 4.88:1 R&Ps.  The auto provides some forgiveness for taller tires unlike the manual transmissions with the 4.62:1 R&Ps.  The auto can generate a little more torque to compensate for a little change in tire diameter.  29" tires are doable on these stock trucks and the change in power going to 29" tires is not terribly significant.  I can still pull 5th gear on the highway and up small hills with my manual tranny.  Larger tires with their increasingly heavier carcasses proportionally degrade your power and fuel economy.  Can't get around that fact of science.  That's why it's important to really be honest about what you intend to use your truck for and how far you drive it each day if it happens to beyour DD (liike mine).  So choose your poison and then enjoy your truck.

As far as the wheels you are wanting, go to a dealer and tell him you want to fit one on the front of your truck to check clearance issues.  If they want to make a sale (most do) they shouldn't have a prolblem with popping off one of your front wheels and sliding one on to spin it around.  Back spacing is an issue.  Sitting here on my ass, I don't recall what the stock back spacing is.  I'm thinking it's aropund 3 inches, but I obviously don't know.  I have a set of steelies out in the garage that I measured once but I don't recall the actual procedure for measuring back spacing.  It's not just measuring the rim lip to the mounting surface.  Some of the guys on here know the actual factory back spacing.

I agree with the point about lift before tires. I sure wish I had some 31-9.5's right about now. Now I have to try and wear out the 235's fast.
