Okay, after trying several searches and getting close, but not right I need help.
My sensor light is on and I am wondering how I can find the trouble codes without going to a shop or shut it off without pulling the bulb.
Second, I seem to have no power in 5th gear. The truck runs strong through 3rd and seems to lose a little bit in 4th, but still moves (up to 75MPH) but then comes 5th and if I am lucky I can hold my speed, but any headwind or slight increase of a hill and I am dead in the water. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

get a manuel for 87 and it has the codes in there. ( make sure its not for a fuel injection)
as for power loss it could be a lot of things, any more details? we could throw a bunch of possibilites at you but it would help if there was something else.

There's a toggle switch that puts the light out up under the dash. It's mounted on the right side of the steering wheel to one of the tubular dash supports. As for a manual, the Haynes repair manual ($15 or so at most parts stores), has the method on how to read the codes without a code reader. You can also go to http://www.troublecodes.net/suzuki/ .
As for losing power in 5th gear, there is an EGR lockout when you put the truck in 5th. If it's not working right, it could be throwing the code and causing the lack of power. HOWEVER...I don't think I've ever seen a stock Sammy with power in 5th :P . My Sammy barely holds 52 mph wide open.

to my knowledge 87 samurai's didn't come with an ECM, it was the 88.5's that came with a computer controlled carb, I got two 87's and neither have a computer

Well there you have it.
I found the switch to shut it off and will pick up the Haynes manual.
I don't know what else I can give as details. It sat in someone's yard for 5 years, I bought it for $600.
Put in a new battery and drove it home.
Then replaced the plugs and wires, changed the fluids, replace fuel filter, put in a K&N air filter and am picking up a rotor and distributor cap tonight. It is lifted (shackles) and is on 29" Super Swampers.
Maybe I am expecting to much. I just figured 5th should atleast run the same speed (even a little better) than 4th.

refriedchicken,
You just told us what we needed to know. A Sami with stock gears running on 29's. That is why you don't have any power. Sami's are rather underpowered with stock tire on them. Add larger, heavier, and knobier tires, and your power goes away!

My tintop goes almost 80 mph and I go faster in 5th than 4th. Of course, I am sitting on 215's.

Just to let you know, my 87 sammie has an ECM (Its not attached to any thing now sense it doesnt have a Zuk engine in it but some did have ECMs) Bigger tires+1.3 liter+stock gears=less than desirable performance.Changing the gear ratio will bring your performance back. You can do this several ways the most common way is differential gears, another way is through T-case gears.I would prefer T-case gears because first stock 3.73s in the diff would be stronger due to more teeth on the ring and pinion, you are already dealing with small axles no need making another weak link, secound only one item to disasemble, and third you can gain your highway torque and speed back plus have a good crawl ratio. You could also add a second box like a Klune under drive or another T-case to reduce your gear ratio, the problem with adding boxes is you run out of room for your rear drive shaft if you're not careful. Whatever direction you go rember changing things is additive ! Later M.Z.

Thanks, for your help guys. I am just glad that it is tires and gears not actual problems, I have some parts on the way to fix the gears and power...
