Title: Turbo on Ebay
Post by: toofaroffroad on June 23, 2009, 04:29:14 PM
A gear-head friend of mine is looking into this for me. I'm sure the install is a bit of a nightmare. Anyone familiar with this Turbo model. It states that it's for 1.9 ltr Grand Vitara. I'm guessing my 2.0ltr tracker would apply.

Yes I know, thats what it says in the ebay listing. I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with these and has used them on Vitaras.

The reason I pointed that out is so that you would know it's not going to bolt up - so you're looking at a custom installation - building a header/manifold, finding your own intercooler and mounting it, doing your own plumbing, perhaps an aftermarket ECU (with direct fire ignition), etc.

A good guy to talk to would be Jess over at TurbineTech (http://www.turbinetech.ca), I don't think he's done a 2.0 Tracker/GV but I know he had a 1.6 Tracker and he's currently offering a kit for the SX4 which is essentially the same J20A engine.

Hope you've got deep pockets though - there are only two ways to go turbo - pay someone who has the experience, or, do it yourself, which translates to you pay to get the experience yourself.

Edit #1 - it was a Sidekick not a Tracker - here's (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=315025) his build thread over at Pirate 4x4.

Edir #2 - if you read that thread pay attention to comments from a guy called Baldur - he also runs (ran?) a turbocharged 1.6 Vitara JLX - essentially the same vehicle as the SideKick but on the other side of the pond (Iceland in this case)

Thanks. My budy did some digging. Yes we could do it but really why bother, I'm just going to wait until a nice 2.7 V6 is available and do a swap.

That turbo is way to small. Well your 2.0 would feel like a diesel 4 banger. Lots of low end but would run out of steam up top.

The 2.0 would be better of with a tall td04 or a t25 from a silvia. You would get good spool and upper rpm would not bottle neck.
