1.6L bottom ends are the same - the difference is in the head / intake / fuel injection & ECU. So, yes, you can toss in a 16v bottom end, and your 8v heads. Samurai guys do this all the time (the 1.3L head will bolt up too). The 8v head is the same in the 1.3L and the 1.6L. The valve seats may be okay, it's far more common for the valve guide seals to go out (read: cheaper & easier).

8v = 80 HP / Tq
16v = 95 HP / tq
2.0L = 130 Hp / Tq

If I were doing a complete swap, I'd be looking for a 2.0L. A lot more power for about the same $$$ (if buying commercially). Check out aftermarket4x4.com - Sean's got several writeups on engine swaps on there. That said - I've seen complete 1.6L go for pretty cheap (private party) in my area ($300-$600 NorCal). Geo Tracker IS the Suzuki Sidekick. Geo never manufactured a single vehicle - they only re-badged other vehicles (Suzuki, Isuzu & Toyota). Also keep an eye out for JDM engines. If frankensteining engines doesn't scare you, in theory you may be able to use heads from Geo Metros (Suzuki Swifts). Check out teamswift.net for more info.

I've known several people who have used the 16V bottom end with the 8V head. The pistons have different valve pockets but the valves clear the pistons. It will most likely be an interference engine.

Hawk & Trail Tough are in Oregon - probably wouldn't be too much $$$ to ship to you. Though, sometimes they charge a premium price for their used stuff... just depends on how over / under stocked they are on bits I guess. Keep an eye out on the for sale section here too.

When you type things into google when the page comes up it will be anything with that phrase etc. If you look on the right it will show you the vendors that have paid for that phrase or word. usally those people that have their site on the right have whatever item you are looking for.

In your original post, you just said "Chevy Geo engine".  You need to be more specific when you are talking to parts suppliers.  The Geo/Chevy Tracker engines will work.  The Geo Storm 1.6 is an Isuzu, and the Geo/Chevy Prizm 1.6 is a Toyota.  Those will not be bolt-in replacements.

 that was actualy my next question .
 . i have  been told my best option is to swap out the 1.6 8V for a 1.6 16Valve  with harnes and ECM . doing the trany at the same time since i have so many miles .

 now what i have been told is that  i should go with  that set up from a 1992-95 Geo /GM/chevy  tracker 4 door or suzuki 4 door so as to get the  trany with overdrive and such .
  now as i understand it  this would only result in a  need for a diffrent trany mount  and  a 3 inch shorter drive line for my  2 door  1989 sidekick .

zukimo sugested  the geo, Asuna sunrunner, suzuki sidekick . but right now here in the boise area and  serounding 300 miles all im finding for Tracker/ kicks / sunnrunner is  basicly usable and clean vehicals  that would be kind of sad to use for a donor  and they are up there in price , IE right around 2000 .
 which in reality isnt to bad . but it is when you only have about 1/2 that  right now LOL

 are there ANY other vehicals that i should consider as a donor vehical to get this  engine , trany , ecm and harness ?

If searching for a specific vendor like "Hawk Suzuki" or "Trail Tough Suzuki", I wouldn't use "suzuki engine" as my search parameter.

thanks JZ
 . i have  been told my best option is to swap out the 1.6 8V for a 1.6 16Valve  with harnes and ECM . doing the trany at the same time since i have so many miles .

1) "best" is hard to define, as there's a lot of variables: budget, availability, aftermarket support, power needs, MPG etc and so on.
2) I'm of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school of thought. If the transmission is good,I'd leave it alone. Do, however, inspect the clutch - now may be a good time to replace it.

now what i have been told is that  i should go with  that set up from a 1992-95 Geo /GM/chevy  tracker 4 door or suzuki 4 door so as to get the  trany with overdrive and such .

I'm pretty sure the only transmission that didn't have OD is the 3-speed auto. The 3-speed auto is a good option if you plan on going with 31-33" tires down the road.

 now as i understand it  this would only result in a  need for a diffrent trany mount  and  a 3 inch shorter drive line for my  2 door  1989 sidekick .

I can't think of a reason you can't use the drive shaft you have already. While you're in there, check for u-joint slop.

are there ANY other vehicals that i should consider as a donor vehical to get this  engine , trany , ecm and harness ?

Those are the ones to look for to source a 16V. But, IMHO, if you're going to go to the trouble to swap out wiring harness / ecu / header / turn key engine... seems like a lot of time & money for 15 more HP. If the head you have is still good - you may only need to replace the bottom end of your 8v, and be good to go. Have you had your head inspected? Have you looked for a JDM replacement? I'd either stick with fixing / replacing the 8v, or jump up to the 2.0L (60% more power). I don't agree that the 16v is the "best" way to go... but as I said, "best" is subjective.

  have not had the head looked at .
 im thinking what the reason for recommending the 16 Valve for was so as  to  be near as a derect drop in as one could get .
  it now has the 3 speed . but  since this spends most of its time on the pavment   and alot of freeway miles .  im thinking thr recomendation for the overdrive was to reduce RPM and increase  fuel economy . since  before the engine went , 65mpg  was just under 4ooo .

 now again i could be wrong  but  what i was told seems logical as the overdrive would drop the RPM  at cruse speeds .

 the recomendating by the way came from off road specialties .
  might i just be , being fed a line here with that ??? dont know . all advice welcome

 bigger tiers  LOL  no  this will stay just a road car . i have my scout for off roading
