The other day I put the stock tires back on (200 mile trip next week, don't wanna wear off the LTB's tread) and now my top speed is around 65mph |removethispart|@3500rpm... that seems really high to me. Is there something wrong here? How does the overdrive in the 5-spd manual work?
-
On the 3 speed Auto (1:1 final drive)
speed was 70|removethispart|@4000 on 235/75-15 Tires
Your 3500|removethispart|@65 sounds like you are in 4th
gear. OD is just a final drive taller than
a 1:1 ratio like .89:1 or 89 hundreths of
a turn to 1 turn of the driveshaft

It's odd, because I am in fifth. :-/
It's not vaccume operated or something, is it?
-
RPM sounds about right to me.
-
Dammit, that's gay. >:( I'll just look into getting some taller tires/wheels for my 33" radials before I head out on my trip :-/
-
Did you change diff gears ??
Sure you didn't forget where
5th is with those big tires ;)

-
I did occasionally use 5th... going down hills :o
Oh well... what are the tallest tires that a place like Walmart would sell that would fit stock wheels?
-
Well I stuffed a Radial Swamper 33/12.5-15
onto a stock rim  ;D
It's my space saver spare ;)

No, unless it's a 5 speed auto ??? Didn't think those
were made

Thats about right man. My tracker would turn 4grand at 70/75. You'll be okay ;D so are you off to GR?

Damn... poor little engine :(
Yep. Heading south monday :)

I guess you must be used to bigger engines. Its about the norm for a 4 pot car engine and its well down from the red line ;D

Go ahead of time and they can order you any size you want. I priced 33x12.50 MTR's there (not stock but they will oder them 4 you. For a highway radial they will have 31-32 in stock

It can handle it. I run 200 miles at 80-85mph daily. That's holding the X-90 at 4500RPM for 1 hr 15 min each way. ;D
Enjoy 5th gear on your trip ;)

Hrm... I never drove it too much stock, and when I did that was way back in the day... if it seems about right, then I'll worry about it a little less... :-/

Will a 31-32 fit a stock wheel, though?
-
Yea, just dont go to wide. Height should not matter on a rim. It's the width that matters. There are guys in my club running 12.50 on 8" rims, so I would think a 31x10.50 would be fine on a stock rim. There was a thread a while back on tire to rim width issues. But I di not remember what the thread name was.

A 10.5 should be on an 8" rim, I have a tyre size/rim size selector guide on my site 'borrowed' from BFG. The recommendations vary very little from one manufacturer to another.

I think I started one a few weeks ago... I just like to ask the same questions over and over again ;)
I might just look into getting a set of 8" wheels and put my 33x12.50's on them... might be cheaper.
How wide are stock Ford F-150 wheels?

Bah! Manufacturer's recomendations are just made to get you to spend more money ;D

That sounds about right, my 2.0 is around that at 70 moh, maybey a little less, but not much in 5th gear. It's just a normal 5 speed, nothing vacuum operated or anything. ;D Dave
If it's the original steel wheels can you go with 235-75-15?'s It's taller than the original tires, narrow enough to fit, and somewhat cheap compared with 31's. Just a thought. ::) Dave

Bah. I'm cheap. I'll just live with the 3 hours feeling like I'm riding a giant beehive :(
-
I'm not following somthing here. Your Speedo to tach ratio in any given gear isnt going to change just by changing tire size unless your changing your speedo gear (and if you are where are you getting it?). Or are you clocking yourself with another car or somthing.
-
i think he was just worried that he was turning to many RPM at 70mph

I'm just concerned about how many RPM's I'm getting with stock gearing/stock tires at 65mph... just a little unnerving after driving it around at about 2500rpm for the last 5 or 6 months... :-/

Lol, I think we spend enough without any encouragement. How many of us have sold on almost new wheels and tyres cos we decided we wanted bigger ::) ;D ;D

O.k. , a bit off topic, but I had a question. When I climb steep hills (like last night) I get back on the highway after and my engine runs 3 times better than it did going out to the trails. What is with that? It's like my engine is not even broken in...
On a side note though, I'm pretty sure that none of the previous owners ever dropped the Kick into 4x4 once.
steveo ???

Mine does the same thing when I get off the highway when I've been running all out for a few miles. Ive always figured the hotter temps in the combustion chamber from working the engine hard clean some of the carbon deposites out making it run better. My tracker also seems to run better when the check engine light is on...... go figure.....
-
That makes sense, thanks man.
