Title: New Shoes
Post by: SpinalTap on August 07, 2004, 05:53:34 AM
Just got 5 new  ProComp Rock Crawler wheels and BFG AT 235/75-15 tires. Now once my camber bolts come in I can install the coil lift ;D The bumper skins will be coming off as well.

Nice!

Wow, I'm surprised at how those 235s fill the wheel wells.

I'd love to see pics after the bumper skins come off.

I'd also like to hear your driving impressions and any MPG changes.

Impressions so far:
At 60MPH they are just as quiet as my Michelin LTX's were. They are stiffer tires and don't roll over as much in corners. So far I'm a likin' 'em :)

As for fit, I had to take out the inner liner on the front fenders as they made significant contact with them. Also, at full lock, they make contact with the lower spoiler part of the front bumper skins...but they are coming off soon so not an issue.

Yeah TN it is starting to look a lot like yours, thanks for the inspiration.  Once my bumper skins are off I'll borrow a wire-feed off a buddy and fab up a sheetmetal facia for the stock bumper...I want it to resemble the Calmini winch bumper when done. The stainless trim on the doors/fenders will be coming off soon as well.

The bumper/lightbar/skid plate is a ProComp unit. I'm thinking of getting the skidplate portion powder coated black.

Well, you confirmed what I'd heard that they are discontinued. Occasionally one will be on E-Bay but it normally goes for a ridiculous price. I'll find a good used one someday. :)

Update #2

I've read in a lot of reviews that these tires are 'noisy' at highway speeds. I'm guessing that the people writing comments like that have a Lexus SC400 as their primary vehicle ;) Anywho I did my 140mi commute today and can truthfully say that, to my ears, they are not any noisier than my Michelin LTX's are. The ride is definitely more firm than the Michelins and I don't think that is a bad thing. I think gas mileage has taken a slight turn for the worse but then again I was bucking a slight headwind on the way home. I'll give it a few more commutes to see how it averages out.  I also noticed that the steering feels like its tightened up some...again I mark that down as a good thing....the steering isn't heavier, just not as loose.

So far...still likin' 'em ;D

Those tires should last forever on a light little kick also.

Going from 205/75 to 235/75, your odometer is reading a few percent low, isn't it?  That'll show you running fewer miles than you actually are for each of those gallons.

Actually I went from 215/75 to 235/75. The speedo was dead on with the 215/75 tires. I took into account the fact that the odo will be out, I am measuring consumption by actual distance. My commute is the same everday at 272kms which is about 169mi. Guess I rounded it off to low when I said it was a 140mi commute ;) Yesterday's commute had added mileage from weekend driving as well. Today I should have a pretty accurate reading as there is no additional mileage to count in. Having said that yesterday's mileage works out to 23mpg and I usually get around 26mpg (US gallons).
