Title: 2004 Tracker - PCM reprogrammed
Post by: jayscott11 on August 06, 2004, 01:13:30 PM
My new Tracker had a problem with the "Power" light flashing on the dash without the Power switch being turned on. To fix this the dealer told me they had to reprogram the PCM (Powertrain Control Module).

Does anyone know why this would be necessary after only 1200 miles on the truck? I am wondering why this happened and if it is likely to happen again.

Thanks for any information on this situatiion.

PCMs and ECMs have what is called
a Flash Ram, which is electronic memory,
that remembers, and can be changed
by flashing or reprogramming the chip.

This could be a defective EEPROM (the
flashable chip) or just a bad flash that
had to be redone, if this happens again
I would insist on a new PCM as a warrantee
item

Thanks for the explanation Wild. I was happy to get the truck back from the dealer, but never really got the full story.
