Suzuki Motor to buy up to 2 million of its own shares
Reuters / July 30, 2004

TOKYO -- Suzuki Motor Corp., Japan's leading minivehicle maker, said on Friday it would buy up to 2 million of its own shares worth 3.9 billion yen ($34.79 million) between Aug.1 and 30.

The planned purchase is equivalent to 0.4 percent of its outstanding stocks.

It is usually a good thing.  When a company buys its own shares on the open market, it says they have more cash than they need for development of new products and research or whatever, and the company is not spending money frivilously, considering themselves to be a good investment.

Also it reduces the number of shares on the market and increases their earnings per share ratio, both of which drive up the price of the shares.  This is good for larger shareholders.

I have this scary nightmare that Suzuki is going to be GM's most valuable asset in the next twenty years and GM is just going to take it over and screw things up... ::)

Well, where do you expect GM to go after they've fucked up all their domestic franchises and the rest of their foreign interests? :P
